Hulu confirms The Orville Season 4

Happy Hopping

Lieutenant Commander
Red Shirt

they just announce it a few days ago (Oct 22), season 3 is actually very good, I am surprise at the budget allow for the special effect of those massive spaceship fight, they can get a few more season out of this. Filming starts Jan. 2025

I think they are using the character Lysella as the new helmsman after they kill off the character Charly Burke as the end of season 3

1) Charly Burke wasn't the helmsman, that's Gordon Molloy. Charly Burke was the navigator.
2) It's quite the leap for someone who is basically a 21st century Starbucks barista to become the navigator of a 25th century starship, even if this season is set a few years after the third season.

Good news, but I hope they have more episodes this season. Season 3 was good, but it suffered pacing problems due to having only 10 episodes that were treated as mini-movies. There were a lot of plot jumps, like a close friendship between two characters suddenly materializing out of nowhere, and a casual fling in one episode suddenly becoming a devoted love affair in the next. In an episodic series like this, it's better to have more episodes to let the character arcs and worldbuilding breathe and grow organically.

It seems more likely that she'd become the bartender in the ship's lounge, replacing the guest character who was there before. Anyway, I'm glad she's sticking around.

It's nice to get official confirmation after all the little bits and pieces of new coming out lately.

Official confirmation is nice. Given the rigors of actual filming and then a pretty extensive post production period, I wonder when we'll be able to see it? 1Q 2027? Thoughts?

Also, I wonder if the usual suspects will be back on the production? (Drexler, et. al...)

The special effects take them so long. Yes, they look fantastic, but episodes are over-bloated with FX work. Star Trek: The Next Generation was able to do so much with far less FX and way more episodes per season. Silver glitter mixed in a glass of water, pantyhose containers glued or to something else and painted, etc. -- creative effects that a number of times not only worked, are highly memorable.

I only found Orville in the 3rd season, so I would need to do some comparison watching with the earlier seasons to comment on the FX. In general, though, I would ask to focus on story rather than aiming for movie-level FX. Especially with the production time required...

The FX were always excellent, but season 3 got too self-indulgent in putting huge FX spectacle/action sequences into pretty much every episode, sometimes with little relevance to the actual story.

Glad the official confirmation finally came out!

It would be nice if we could get a physical disc release of season 3 before 4 premieres.

In all honesty, there really should be one. Disney+ at the very least is currently releasing their Star Wars and MCU shows on physical media, and the Doctor Who 60th anniversary specials with David Tennant are due out on physical media in North America in December. Hulu is under the Disney umbrella, so there's no real reason Orville S3 can't be released on physical media.

Granted, I wouldn't expect it until within six months or so of S4's premiere, so probably still a wait yet.

1) I wonder is it because Season 3 only have 10 episodes, so they manage to have that much $ to make special effect

2) I am very surprise that Seth falls in love w/ his co-star, and when that relationship breaks up, she has to leave the show

3)

she's not happy

Will Grayson's mole disappear in the 4th season of the Orville like what happened to Radar's mole in the 4th season of M*A*S*H and Tilly's mole in the 4th season of Star Trek Discovery? I hope not.

Season 3 was supposed to have more episodes, but because production kept getting postponed, the decision was made to cut off after ten episodes were completed. The increased budget had more to do with Hulu now providing funding.

If you're referring to Halston Sage, that wasn't the reason she left the show. Granted the exact reasons for her departure haven't been made clear, though IIRC her relationship with MacFarlane ended after she left the show. She did have movies scheduled to film during the same time Orville S2 did, which likely played a part in her decision to leave. Besides, MacFarlane replaced her with another of his exes anyway.

Is it just me, or did something eerily similar happen with Gene Roddenberry and his exes on the show?
