Superman is a robot?
Use the heat vision thingy to destroy toxic waste dumps, in fact destroy all the enormous land fills in general. Might seem a relatively small move, but it would be a step in the right direction.

I would actually fly all the politicians to a deserted island and not let them leave until they agreed to actually work for the betterment of their people rather than to boost their own egos.

One of Superman's more underused powers.
Kidding aside I don't think I'd do anything much more than what Superman does. Fly around and stop bad things from happening. Though I wouldn't hold back as much and wouldn't be so adverse to killing people who're obviously irreversibly evil.

Fly into every world leader's home/office/bunker and bitchslap the shit out of them.
Make knots into artillery and missiles.
Throw all nuclear weapons into the sun.
Lift stuff like aircraft carriers and heavy cruisers out of the water and park them on some hill.
Grab Bob Orci by the ankles and whack Kurtzman, Abrams and Lindelof with him.
Fly into every world leader's home/office/bunker and bitchslap the shit out of them.

The thing about Superman is he just has no boundaries. He can actually walk up to Assad or Kim Jong Un in their bedrooms and tell them personally to stop their shit, without any diplomatic or bureaucratic crap. If there is a raid on a village in Africa, he can swoop in and stop those crazy motherfuckers. If there is a hunger crisis, he can just take/borrow/steal food from anywhere and let it rain on those who need it. When the world leaders can't decide to reduce the amount of nuclear weapons, he can grab the bombs on all sides and throw them away. Nobody could stop him from doing so. He could do all the right things that are prevented by the boundaries that are self imposed by our society, politics and economy. And since he doesn't represent any nations, his actions would not cause wars between countries or factions.
My favorite scene from Iron Man 1, where Stark just goes into the village attacked by the terrorists, when the US military doesn't act. Because superheroes can act when all others decide not to.

You are right, logically. But humans don't tend to react logically, but emotionally. They would see that Superman lives in the U.S. and claims U.S. citizenship. Emotionally, people around the globe would blame the U.S. for his actions, and take action against the U.S.
