How would Barclay have fared if he'd really ended up on Voyager?

at Quark's

Vice Admiral
Admiral
Just rewatched Pathfinder. In it, Barclay gets obsessed with (contacting) Voyager, uses it as an escapist fantasy in which he is Voyager's superman, and in the end actually manages to contact the ship.

Got me thinking: how would he actually have fitted in there? I mean, on the one hand, he might have been relieved to be finally away from 'society' and its expectations at large and his resourcefulness might have been valued, on the other hand, pulling together and forging a close-knit community would probably be way more important on a ship in Voyager's predicament than on a ship like the Enterprise.

So, would Barclay have had some measure of "success" on Voyager, or would he have ended up more like a Good Shepherd kind of character?

I like to think that Lt.Barclay would have done well on Voyager. I would imagine he would probably have gotten on more then a few nerves for sure, as well I'm sure he would have had his own set of issues being so far away from home. Who wouldn't? But he would have been a great asset to the crew for a lot of situations, that is for sure.

The reality of it never would have come anywhere close to the version of Voyager he imagined. He'd be heartbroken again and again by not having the worship he craved.

I think he would have ended up more like one of the slackers in Good Shepherd but, given the unusual situation the crew/ship were in some task that he excelled at would have assigned to him that would have prevented him from sliding down into complete uselessness.
He also developed a friendship with Tom Paris and they would have become "enablers" of sorts for each other (each trying to weasel more time on the holodeck and becoming co-conspirators in creating the most outlandish holodeck program ever), meaning they would both have spent some random time in the brig here or there. This, in turn, would have caused some tension between Tom & B'Elanna, adding a little more realism (not that it was needed- I have few gripes with this pairing) and strife to their relationship.

... now that I think about it, I can see Barclay getting into a huge fight with Holodoc because he infringed upon his holodeck golfing or singing time slot ...:)

He never would have made it past that episode with the clown.

He would not be appropriate for or well suited in those conditions. I'm sure Neelix and Kes would try to make his stay and situation more comforting but he's a character who was not fit for Star Fleet.

Come on, guys. Voyager's holodeck time was rationed. Do you think Barclay would be able to handle that? :shifty::D

The point of the Barclay character is that he's a smart guy, that is as good at this job as the rest of the senior staff, but his social anxiety keeps it from showing a lot of the time and prevents him from being any sort of leader.

In short - Barclay would be an older, more mature Billy Telfer.

Yes. Your description also has me thinking Sylvia Tilly.

I hadn't seen too many eps with Sylvia - mostly clips. Good clips, actually... Not just because I can relate to her with some things but because there's something extra interesting about how she reveals she can't tattle any secrets and at one point seemed somewhat chipper as Neelix (briefly)... The show has had ups and downs but I will be revisiting it later on.

Back to Voyager, Barclay would have gotten a promotion before Harry Kim, made friends with Tuvok, battled Q for the love of Janeway (and probably would have won or at least being in second place with Q still in last place...)

Tilly's anxiety is mild as it gets compared to Barclay's.

It's very questionable how Barlcay could have completed Starfleet Academy. He'd have finished his Kobayashi Maru hiding in a Jefferies tube somewhere.

We don't know if every student has to do that test. Perhaps just those that go for a command track. Why would engineering students need to take it, for example?
