How to Find a 3D Movie in 3D...

So I'm new to this whole "3D" movie thing. Haven't seen a movie in 3D... ever. Saw some TV in 3D back in the 90s when ABC did it as a sweeps promo thing, back with blue and red glasses that made you sick, but... nothing modern.

I want to see Avatar in 3D though, but, how do I tell if my theater is 3D? Is there a site or something that lists such things?

The theater should list the showing as 3D, yes. My local one listed the 3D showing of Avatar as – get ready for this – "Avatar 3D." Call your theater or look the film listings up online via ZIP code.

The glasses these days are much improved from the red/blue tinted lenses of old; they use polarized lenses now, so there's no color. They look and feel like black plastic reading glasses with a sunglasses-like tint to them. The 3D effect itself is much better than I remember, too. It's not nauseating any more.

My only xp with 3d was Superman returns at Imax, the 20 minutes of it, or so. I didn't get a headache from it because of the limited time, but it's still slightly disorienting, and I've heard the new tech doesn't improve on that aspect much. Still, I'll risk it for Avatar.

Yeah, when you go online or go to the theater, they will usually have "3D" somewhere near the title. If you see "Avatar" with no "3D" nearby, it is implicitly the 2D version.

You can always ask when you are buying your tickets, though, if you are unsure.

They do cut down on the perceived color though. My wife and I saw "Up" in 3d. About halfway through I decided I'd have rather had it in 2D.

Or your theater might do what ours did. Below the "A Christmas Carol in 3D!" marquee was a handwritten in black marker paper sign that read "not in 3D".
