How old is Captain Janeway

According to an okudagram shown in The Killing Game Janeway was born in 2344. That means she was 27 in 2371 when she took command of Voyager.

THere were two of those okudagrams and then there's a book I think, (book fans anyone?) that the killing game date is incorrect. She was in her mid to late 30s in Caretaker-just like Kate.

According to Memory Beta which deals with book related facts, Kathryn Janeway was born on May 20, 2335 in Bloomington, Indiana. Kathryn's younger sister, Phoebe Janeway, was born four years later.

Janeway was accepted into Starfleet Academy in 2353 at the age of 18.

She met Riker briefly during her first year at the Academy. According to Memory Alpha which deals with TV series related facts, Riker was also born in 2335.

By late 2359, Janeway was second officer aboard the USS Mary Kingsley, under the command of Captain Onna Karapleedeez. During their mission surveying the Scorpius Reach in Beta Quadrant, they assisted a civilian research vessel, the Cleopatra's Needle. One of the researchers Janeway worked with was Jean-Luc Picard, who had taken a leave of absence following his loss of the USS Stargazer. (TNG novel: The Buried Age)

In 2363, Captain Janeway assumed command of the USS Billings. The Billings was her first proper command, and she often felt deeply responsible for her actions and the effects on her crew. Following one away teammission, she felt deeply responsible for the loss of Ensign Yvonne Harper's legs, unborn child, and sanity. (VOYepisodes: "Revulsion", "Night"; VOY novels: Pathways, Cloak and Dagger)

While choosing key personnel to serve under him on the USS Enterprise-D, Captain Jean-Luc Picard was disappointed that Janeway was no longer available as a candidate for first officer. (TLE novel: The Buried Age)

In 2365, the now Captain Janeway was in command of the USS Bonestell on a six-month exploratory mission of the Beta Quadrant. Following the mission, Janeway went before a review board consisting of Admiral Paris, Admiral McGeorge Finnegan, and Admiral Alynna Nechayev. Ensign Tuvok was called in to criticize Janeway's ignorance of tactical regulations on the mission, and it was recommended by Admiral Finnegan that Tuvok serve under Janeway on her next deep-space mission. Janeway and Tuvok were still serving together on the Bonestell when Janeway asked Tuvok to transfer with her to Voyager. (VOY novels: Mosaic, Pathways)

Info about Voyager crewmembers birthdays can be found at the Kes Website on the page "Voyager Birthdays". :techman:

Captain Janeway was 35 at the time she was promoted to Captain and assigned to the Voyager.
She spent some time seeing the final stages of construction over Voyager, she would have been 36 (or close to) at the time of Voyagers mission launch.

Mid to late 30s sounds right. Voyager was her first command. Wasn't she in the academy at the same time as Riker (books)

Well, I thought that prior Voyager, Janeway has been in command of the Billings where she has met Tuvok... .

As for her age, I'd say between 30 - 36 yo, what is quite young to command a vessel (though Kirk was even younger when he was in charge of the Entreprise).

There is a bit of a contradiction. She does talk about her first command with tuvok, but later in shattered she refers to Voyager as her first command. My assumption was on the Billings she was put in command of a group but was first officer or Commander, and Voyager was her first ship as a full captain

Yes, Command positions are not just for Captains. Lieutenant Commanders usually get to experience their first taste of Command with temporary positions. And it seems to be less known that Commanders actually make up the majority of ships Commanding Officers. These first commands are most commonly smaller vessels or stations.
Senior, experienced Commanders can then be promoted to Captain, and receive larger more important commands, that are usually a more permanent position.

I'd say early to mid thirties. She does mention to seven about participating in the cardassian border conflicts-we know O'Brien did as well as they were about a decade or two removed from the events of DS9 and Voyager.

2335 seems like a reasonable birth date. If she enters the academy in the early 2350s and then fought in the cardassian border conflict in the 2360s.

That seems like it lines up to me.

If we assume a 2335 birth date she is 35. If I'm not mistaken caretaker starts in 2370.

Though depending on the exact month of the episode, she could be closer to 36 than 35
