How much timeline wise is open for TOS?

If you consider the five year mission and the movies, what is the time from which you could write stories about the ToS crew without functionaly breaking known canon?

For example;

How much time is between TMP and the end of TOS timeline wise?

How much time has the crew been together before the first episode of TOS?

Oy, there's a lot of theories on thisand it's been a long time but let me see if I can dredge it up out of my memory.

The two basic schools of thought on TMP to TWOK is that 1) there was another 5-year mission before Kirk was again promoted to Admiral and Spock went to teach at the Academy and this period extends for anywhere from one to five years and 2) TWOK follows within a year or two of TMP with maybe one or two adventures following V'Ger.

There's almost no guessing (based on any textual evidence) on how long Kirk had been in command of the Enterprise by WNMHGB, but I think fanon has it somewhere in the vicinity of 3 months to a year.

2254-2265(between the two TOS pilot episodes)
2269-2270(the final year of the five-year mission, never shown in live-action episodes...some conjecture some TAS stories are set in this final year, though...this was when the Enterprise would have met the asteroid ship Yonada when she finally reached her long-foretold and prophesied "safe destination")

A lot depends on whether or not the movie ends with Kirk in permanent command of the Enterprise. If we see the beginning of the five-year mission then they've got a maximum of about two years of Trek time before they start overwriting the TOS timeline, assuming each season of TOS lasted about one year.

My own theory, however, is that this movie will establish a new timeline that is similar to the old one in terms of major events but wide open to reinterpretation on the particulars. In fact, it wouldn't surprise me if Orci or Kurtzman or some other potential writer of the next Trek film is already thinking about a nu-Trek big-screen adaptation of The Doomsday Machine or maybe Ballance of Terror.

ballance of Terror being the third film to feature a romulan enemy. I dont mind if they 'rewrite' episodes in film format that might be kind of refreshing.

Assuming the original timeline is restored, there's also also the never shown second five year mission after TMP.

Isn't the second five year mission fan guesswork?

There are some books set in that period, so it's kinda sorta semi-official.
