How much do we know now that we didn't know 6 months ago?

asp7485

Lieutenant Commander
Red Shirt
Spoilers (maybe)........

After thinking over all the recent online chats and interviews, I realized there isn't much we know about the movie now that we didn't know a few months ago. We've gotten a couple of general ideas about scenes, the ship, some characters, cast members, but other than that, there is still plenty we don't know.

The marketing strategy for the movie is excellent. Paramount is tapping into the hardcore fans by having Abrams et al do online chats for Trekmovie.com, but the film is also referenced frequently in mainstream media (I saw pictures of Quinto and Pine in OK magazine with a blurb on them as the new Kirk and Spock). It's very clear they're going for mainstream and hardcore. I hope it works.

Still, despite all the recent activity, its nothing but a tease. There is so much more to come.

Yup, the marketing strategy here is 'treat em mean, keep em keen'. Give us enough noise that we think we're getting signal, while keeping the actual information flow extremely narrow. We're at least two months into production and we've not got an unambiguous Starfleet uniform shot yet. By this point on Nemesis we had the script.
It's a very good strategy for a property like Star Trek: lets face it, the fans aren't gonna get bored, go away, and then not see the movie, and we'll salivate and have 1000 post discussions on any tiny snippet. meanwhile the general public don't really care about that sort of info so they can chat away in very generalised terms about the film and garner public interest while maintaining the lid on any actual info.

Insurrection too. I mean, at this stage with that film. They've got a tighter lid than ever before, that much is clear.

EDITED by PKTrekGirl:

Please note: Spoilers for Cloverfield follow!

Please use spoiler codes or spoiler warnings in future! Thanks!

-----------------------------

JJ knows how to market.

One problem I see: apparently Cloverfield has cratered-perhaps folks actually wanted to see the Monster killed off instead of saved, Godzira-like, for future films?

Only a few things have come out, and that's all to the good.

You know there's spoiler code for something like this, don't you? Thank you. I'm going to see the film tomorrow.

While I can understand wanting the actual script kept under wraps and am surprised the thing hasn't leaked yet, would it kill them to give us an official plot synopsis? We're still just speculating on the plot and only have rumours that it may feature time travelling Romulans. Would something official about the plot really be damaging?

Re: How much do we know now that we didn't know 6 months ago

I hope the script doesn't leak until after the film premieres. All I need to know about this movie is it stars Kirk, Spock, etc. That's enough to get me into the cinema. I don't want a detailed, or vague, synopsis of the plot. I don't understand why so many people do. Isn't it better to go to the premiere as unspoiled as possible?

Yes, but I would also like a vague idea of what I'm about to watch.

That's what the upcoming trailers and teasers are for. :D

Some of us who have been around for a while may know a lot more about the plot of Trek XI than we realize...

Back in October of 2006 a poster named Magister posted for the first time and gave a detailed synopsis...
(What follows is my best recollection of what Magister posted)
]...that spelled out how some Romulan's are sent back in time and manage to change the future of Starfleet by eliminating someone (Kirk) who they feel was the key player in keeping them from becoming the dominant force in this corner of the galaxy. It also went on to explain how Old Spock, apparently is the only one who knows this information and is able to go back to prevent the Romulan's from completing their mission. It also detailed a sub-plot that explained how Spock is able to revive Dead Kirk with some gadget that the Romulan's also have found recently and involved some kind of nano-technology. The begining paragraph was a detailed scene supposedly from the begining of the movie, of Young Spock walking through a dark cave filled with fog/smoke and hearing different voices (we the movie audience, recognize them as snipets of lines from his future, from previous movies and TOS) untill he comes upon a hooded figure near the back of the cave, who removes his hood and we we can just barely see through the smoke/fog an elderly figure with pointed ears indicating that it is either a Romulan or a Vulcan. At that point the scene fades out and the movie titles begin with the Trek Fanfare.

It was about four paragraph's in length and was quite good in my humble opinion.
Many around here (as usual) ripped it to pieces, but many also found it quite appealing.
Most everyone that posted in the thread pretty much agreed that it was not just some "fans take" on what the movie might be, as it was a very well written piece of scripting.
My recollection of it above, does in no way, do it justice.

Unfortunately, I've checked the Search function of the Forums and it appears that this particular thread has been deleted.

Magister has only posted 6 times here on the Trek BBS, but all of his posts have been Quite Intriguing.

Again, unfortunately there is only one of his post's that can still be found and it is here:

I thought I had saved his original post to my hard drive but I can't find it.
Perhaps, if someone happens to see him lurking around they could ask if he would care to post it again.

Seriously. Isn't that what people do for other movies? Why is Trek different?

Nobody ever wants to be surprised anymore. :(

Re: How much do we know now that we didn't know 6 months ago

That was me. I posted as Magister several times a couple of months ago to gauge fan reaction to the plot of the upcoming film. I wasn’t trying to be dishonest in anyway, but I just wanted to offer up several scenarios based on the rumors and hints that JJ and gang had mentioned in the press. I didn’t identify my storylines as fan fiction or speculation because I found that sometimes the masses tended to dismiss those kinds of posts too readily, and for me, I was genuinely interested in where Trek was going plot-wise.

To me, Star Trek has always been more about the story than anything else. You’ll rarely find me posting about the designs or costumes or effects – they just aren’t as important overall(imo). But I always found a wealth of inspiration from the creative plots of Trek. Like many posters here, I grew up with it. Now as a Magister (Latin for teacher) I try to instill the sense of wonder and creative style that I found in Trek in my writing classes.

I was thrilled to learn that Star Trek would be returning to its roots, as it were, with this film. The original, to me, had the best in terms of expression of theme and character development and interaction. When JJ said he thought those characters could “live again” I took him at his word. The meetings with Shatner and Nimoy only confirmed this belief, and so I speculated how this would be done. As you can tell by recent cast additions, etc., what I submitted as a synopsis would not work as the real plot of the film. Early on I thought it would focus on Spock and Kirk only and the rest of the crew would have been brought along slowly in the sequels. But I am still very excited about the possibilities that this film holds: origin stories, alternate timelines, flashbacks, etc. I still think this could be the film we as fans have been waiting for (ultimate Trek optimism). :)

So there you go; I have no more inside information than anyone else. I was and still am simply a fan -- no more, no less. I hope you’ll understand.

Sounds too much like Shatners book The Return to me.
