To make this very pretty Facebook map?

linky

I wonder if they have statistics on the age groups of FB users.

I'm sure they do. FB no doubt makes most of their money selling information about its users.

Those "Like" buttons aren't just for fun. They create aggregate statistics showing who likes what bands, TV shows, movies, etc. They can break it down by age group, location, religion, gender--everything. It's a marketroid's dream.

That's pretty cool, actually.

And it doesn't surprise me that China doesn't have a huge showing on this map. When my friends were over there a few years ago teaching English, Facebook was illegal and was blocked from most of China's servers.

I found it interesting that Greenland apparently shows up better than Siberia

Yeah, apparently the majority of Asia hasn't discovered the internet yet.

It's interesting to see the places where Facebook is absent, either due to poverty or their barely habitable climates.

Yeah, there's not really anything to explain for Australia. All the points are concentrated where people actually live. Most of Oz is uninhabited.

Way to go China! :techman:

They have their own Chinese copycat versions that give the censors the ability to audit, edit and censor all offending posts. Same for Youtube.

Too bad it doesn't work all that well as Li Gang found out.

Continental America, you really can tell where the rainfall begins to become less in the west.

Nope, they still make the vast majority of their money from more "traditional" Internet advertising streams.

Quite honestly, this article makes me want to use Facebook even less than I do now.

That's a little surprising. I was sure FB was fully exploiting its users' data.
