born of a discussion of SJA, I am wondering how many times another actor has played the Doctor, via use of a body swap or other such plot device.

Obviously there is the 2nd, 1st Doctor Richard Hurndall. Toby Jones (Dream Lord) & David Morrissey (Jackson Lake) are noted, but neither are really playing the Doctor. theDoctor/Donna again not quite the Donna

Lets try limiting this to TV only.

You have Patrick Troughton playing Salamander impersonating the Doctor, if that counts.

I wonder if Sketcher thinks the two Peter Cushing movies might count here.

Are there any instances of a "fake Shemp" being done ?

How about Sylvester McCoy playing the 6th doctor for about 10 seconds?

Hmmm ... There's the Dalek robot Doctor in The Chase. Some scenes had Hartnell playing both, others had another actor. That same actor also played the First Doctor in a few other episodes, such as in the Dalek Invasion of Earth.

Technically, the Valeyard was another actor playing the Doctor. Same with the Watcher.

im not explaning it well, The Valeyard is planning a future Doctor, not one of the known Doctors.

Maybe I need to use Star Trek for this, in Turnabout Intruder, Sandra Smith plays the role of Captain Kirk (whilst Shatner turns his hand at Janice Lester), has similar happened for the Doctors?

Not sure what "the Watcher" was, was he the 5th Doctor, or somthing else?

The Watcher is an intermediate stage, between the 4th and 5th Doctors, who follows the 4th around in Logopolis.

The Valeyard is another intermediate stage, a distillation of his dark side from between the 12th and 13th Doctors.

Obviously there are lots of stunt doubles over the years.

The bodyswap in New Earth is just a possession, with Cassandra taking over others, so nobody else plays the Doctor in that.

^ I'd always thought the Watcher was an intermediate, but from much farther in the future.

Did they ever really explain this, outside of "so he was the Doctor all along" ?

The only one I can think of specifically is Tennant's body double Colum Regan who played both the Doctor and the DoctorDonna in scene's in Journey's End. Mainly from the back admittedly but you did get to see his face briefly in at least one scene when they exit the TARDIS on Bad Wolf Bay.

When the Doctor's life essence gets drained into Jano in The Savages, Jano starts to exhibit some of the Doctor's characteristics and personality - so effectively Frederick Jaeger is playing William Hartnell's Doctor at that point.

Given the length of the show, it surprises me that this has not happened more.

however I guess when you regenerate your lead character like you do with the Doctor every few years, you dont want to have any other people playing the Doctor, than is needed. I mean really I think the BBC have been lucky to get away with the regeneration of the Doctor, ok it is part of the show now, but obviously that was not always the case.

I think the answers would be more interesting if you didn't limit it to TV.

I guess so, but I wont think there is enough in there, for them to start walking and talking like the 10th Doctor.

ok, ill open it up to other forms of fiction, I had thought there would be more on TV.
