How many "Starfleet Academy" characters have shown up in Trek Lit?

Ian Keldon

Fleet Captain
I was surprised (and pleased) to see a reference to Pava ek'Noor (the Andorian) being on board the Titan.

How many of the other Omega Squad cadets (Edam Astrun, Matt Decker, and T'priell/Selke) have been mentioned in the current crop of novels? What about Commander Zund or Undellia Noor?

Hm, did any of the characters in the game ever show up again? Had an Andorian too.

I loved that game back then, by the way. It's the closest any of the video games ever came to really capturing the Star Trek feel, and due to making the player a cadet was just the ultimate in guilty pleasure escapism.

Right, I realized that but I thought we might as well make it about both :).

My initial reaction was when the hell was a decker in Starfleet Academy.

Followed by a quick jaunt to memory beta, followed by a longer, more wallet emptying trip to ebay.

I think I...hate you now

Vanda M'Giia (sp?) from the videogame/novelization cropped up in the Myriad Universes tale, "Tears of Eridanus"

I don't think anyone but Pava has shown up again from the comic series.

Nobody from the "Best and Brightest" (since we're Academying) novel has returned, either.

Of course, there have been multiple "Starfleet Academy" stories to draw on -- there's the Marvel comic, the computer game, a DC Comics TOS annual by Peter David, The Best and the Brightest, the young-adult series from the '90s, and the current Abramsverse YA series. The '90s Starfleet Academy YA series produced at least three characters who later showed up in other Trek Lit: Zak Kebron, Soleta, and Mark McHenry.

But as far as I know, Pava and Vanda M'Giia are the only other characters from any of the Academy stories who's been picked up by Trek Lit.

You're welcome! ;)

Seriously...enjoy the read. SA (the comic) was a great little series that should have gone longer.

A really good deal, if you can afford it is the CD-ROM compilation of all the Trek comics produced prior to the early 00s.

I wish I could afford it, since it has the entirety of DC's trek (both runs), the excellent Starfleet Academy, as well as Early Voyages (about Pike's Enterprise, published at the same time).

Also included are all the graphic novels and stand alones except for the X-Men/Star Trek crossover ones (not included due to licensing concerns). Gems among the GAs include "Debt of Honor", "Double Time" (a New Frontiers story), and an often-overlooked Romulan centric Borg encounter called "Operation Assimilation".

I seem to remember Nog making reference to all of the characters from Omega Squad in Mission Gamma: Cathedral, so I think it's safe to say that the Marvel Comics Starfleet Academy series is (at least partially) part of the Destiny-verse continuity.

That's pretty cool, I'd no idea they'd ever done anything like that.

Don't fancy reading via my monitor, but definitely something to bear in mind if tablets ever drop to anything remotely close to a reasonable price.

And yeah, double time was awesome. I've got that and some of the old PAD comics.

Also in Cathedral, he mentions Talos IV as one of the worlds he's visited.

THe only problem with that is that it's a DVD, and as far as I know none of the tablets have disc drives. You'd also want to make sure your PC or Mac has a DVD-ROM drive, not just CD-ROM. I'm pretty sure most computers from the last 10 years or so have DVD drives, but I'd still check to make sure.

Correct. On page 321, Nog reminisces about his time with Omega Squad (which is directly mentioned by name, as is their journey to Talos IV in the "Telepathy War" crossover). and it is mentioned that OS was led by the decesndent of a Starfleet legend, but the name "Decker" is not specifically used.

Nah, looks like it'd be fine - reviews say it runs via pdf, so it will probably be happy with any old viewer, should be able to copy the disc via a computer and then load it onto flash memory. Worst comes to worst the disc itself can be ripped & mounted as a virtual drive.

I own the disc and know a few people who have ported the the PDF files right onto a tablet with little no issue. The only copy protection on the disc is a Starfleet Delta watermark if the PDFs are opened in non-Adobe Programs.

That said, I have run across some poor scans in the mix. And sometimes the pages have long load times even on my <1 year old computer. Still it's well worth the price of admission.

Oh man, The Best and the Brightest was so good.
