I know alot of people who frown on sci fi stuff(expessialy star trek) saying they wanna see this movie or did go see it and loved it.Anyway you look at it,it's a perfect theature movie with space battles and lots of action well worth seeing on the big screen.

Re: How many new people are intrested in Star Trek now the new films o

This movie will do for Trek and possibly scifi-adventure what the recent slew of awesome comic books movies did for that genre.

I will tell you this much, I was once a Trek fan, but in recent years had more or less stopped considering myself a real fan of most Trek, and had grown quite critical of it. I NEVER liked TOS, even when I did like the other series (even Voy and Ent.... yikes).

But now I totally into it again. If it can do it for me, it can do it for John Doe who held no previous opinions one way or another.

Re: How many new people are intrested in Star Trek now the new films o

I have seen every second of canonical Trek, most of it two or more times.

This movie made me sick to my stomach.

Most newcomers to Star Trek will like it, but that is like the family from Poltergeist liking the house they moved into without knowing it was built on top of a cemetery.

My youngest brother wants to see TOS now after seeing the movie. Up till now the only interest he has had in Trek is the new movie.

Re: How many new people are intrested in Star Trek now the new films o

Oh, lots of my friends who wouldn't give it the time of day are asking me (the resident Trek expert) when I'm going again so they can go when they're off work. We're coordinating it now. They are excited about this film, and these are UFC Fighting/Monster Truck shows type guys, but they want to see this movie.

Several of my friends who were non-trek are now among us!

Re: How many new people are intrested in Star Trek now the new films o

I post on two other forums, one of which has a thread for the film and another a 'Just watched...' type thread... both are filled with people new to ST or who thought it to be for the geeks only who loved the movie.

I also took an anti-Trek friend to the film on Saturday and she's just sent me a text to inform me she's just asked play.com to notify her when the DVD's available and bought a poster... that night I had a pub full of people who had no interest telling me they'd see it. Some were friends... one was a writer who (in an odd twist of fate) heard me ramble about it on Thursday.

Re: How many new people are intrested in Star Trek now the new films o

My sisters are going to see it, they always frowned upon my love of the show. BUT I dont expect them to want to see any other Trek after it. They probably wouldnt even bother to see the second film. Its one of the few big fx films right now and many are seeing it due to imo overated word of mouth but I dont expect it to spill over into the other series or even next film.

I always cringe when people throw about the word canon or it's variations, as it's largely a term used to define religious rules or law. The closest "Trek" description of the word canon being "the works of an author accepted as authentic". Unfortunately Trek is not the works of a single author, it's many. Many which have time and again over the decades contradicted each other for a plot point, no matter how small. However in Trek terms it seems to be regarded more as it's religious definition which is a bit frightening.

Just curious, since you do point it out and all, does having seen every "second" of the original Star Trek, give you some special dispensation that elevates your status as an authority on the subject?

Just curious since I have seen every second of the original as well, many many more than "twice". In fact I can state quite certainly that there isn't an episode I haven't seen at least numbering in the dozens of times. And the movie certainly didn't make me ill.

Re: How many new people are intrested in Star Trek now the new films o

My boss and coworker went and saw it with no previous experience of Trek and loved it. My roommate's girlfriend and her two roommates went and saw it and loved it. My next door neighbors saw it and loved it. It's a GREAT movie to get people interested!

Well, at least you have seen all the canon then, which includes the new film. Not all of 'canon' is brilliant, anyway. I can think of a whole bunch of stuff I thought made me nauseous or that was just plain stupid over the years. We all have our own internal personal canon, really. If I were goddess of Star Trek I would get rid of ... ;)

Re: New People... Over on LJ, there are new comms growing rapidly with those who were only casual fans before, or who had never seen Star Trek ever. I think the numbers can only grow, and that it's a good thing.

I have a several friends that generally weren't interested in Star Trek that are now wanting to see this movie, some have already seen it and loved it. I have to say it reinvigorated me as a Trek fan as well.

The question shuold be how many peopleare interested in the new movie. We should be asking how many people are getting interested in ST, TNG, DS9, VOY as a result of this movie.

It's a good movie for people to watch and enjoy for the time it is on, however I am not convinced it will lead to many people, who are not already Star Trek fans, trying to check out other Trek stuff like the shows or novels.

At most I can see it getting people interested in a sequel. Not a new tv series or anything of that sort.

Re: How many new people are intrested in Star Trek now the new films o

several friends came with me. two who had never seen an episode in their lives. those two said, "well, you've made trekkies out of us."

little sister who is ten years younger went to see it. said she liked it, reminded her of watching TNG with me years and years ago.
