How is Sisko not the best ST Captian by far?

ZeNd

Fleet Captain
Fleet Captain
Currently re-watching DS9 for the 100th time and while I always thought DS9 and Sisko was the best in the franchise, it seems like from a older perspective this is even more clearly the case. It's to the point now where I don't understand what possible arguments you can have against Sisko being the best Captain to ever grace the ST screen.

He has the heart of a Klingon but the intelligence and compassion of a starfleet officer. He has a precense of command and authority that goes way beyond Picard. Everybody respects him as their superior and commands respect as soon as he walks into the room.

Do you think Wolf would of questioned Sisko like he questioned Picard in First Contact? Of course not, he knows Sisko would of knocked Worf on his ass. How many has Sisko told worf off? Too many to count. Picard seemed kinda scared of Worf half the time.

Sisko's great, but Picard is definitely my favourite. Patrick Stewart can just own an episode and his best performances (e.g. The Inner Light) are outstanding.

Each to his own, but I think Picard's got Sisko beaten here. Check out the ending of TNG The Defector.

Would Sisko have hit Worf? I don't really recall Sisko ever being violent to his fellow officers. Unlike Worf. Anyway, it's pretty clear Worf has a lot of respect for both Sisko and Picard.

Considering the company he's in, I can't see Sisko as head and shoulders above the rest. I'd probably prefer to be on Picard's ship.

Sisko and Picard are my joint favourite captains.

Picard schooled Worf in Rightful Heir, Redemption and Reunion. And in Change of Heart (which can be argued is a more serious infraction) Sisko didn't go ballistic on Worf. I think it's just a difference in personality between the two. Sisko is bold and no nonsense, and Picard is more reserved. Both are effective leaders, since Sisko's demeanour commands respect, and Picard's analytical/problem-solving skills and general wisdom also commands respect also.

I think what Sisko had was he was a more complete person than the other captains and that was because unlike the others we got a much better sense of the man outside of his role as a Starfleet officers. The other captains lacked much of this due to their show's formats.

Sisko would be the best captain to serve under, that's for sure. Tough enough for any fight but calculated enough that he would be the least likely to get me killed. :rommie:

Kirk - Loose cannon, goes through redshirts like tribbles through quadrum tritacale.

Picard - Who put that old granny in charge of a starship?

Janeway - What personality are we wearing today?

Archer - Unstable neurotic asshat, the worst of the bunch. The only upside: maybe the aliens will kick his ass and forget about me?

I think Sisko's the second-best regular series captain behind only Kirk. He's also MUCH more consistently written than Janeway and Archer, a sign that the DS9 writers really got a handle on his character early on.

However, .... I HATED the whole Sisko as Prophet/Messiah crap they started around the middle of the series. His being "Emissary" in the metaphoric sense that he'd established contact with the wormhole aliens was OK, but by the end of the series, they really went way too far with his birth arranged by the Prophets, and him fighting demon-possessed Dukat, etc. That stuff just got ridiculous.

Sisko is my least favorite captain. He crossed too many lines for the wrong reasons to allow me to respect him, and he didn't exactly make up for it with the warm fuzzies the rest of the time. And I still don't know what an "Emissary" is.

Picard wins by a longshot even though i like ds9 more. Although i think that both characters are excellent leaders, but if you look at them both when they are angry, sisko just seems like a little boy having a temper tantrum while picard actually seems realistic most of the time. I also like picard more because he is readily willing to defy orders and duty when they conflict with morality, whereas sisko on several occasions sets aside morals in order to follow his orders or to try and achieve a greater good.

Sisko had his ship destroyed by the Breen.
Picard had his ship destroyed by the Klingons.

Kirk blew up his own damn ship ... Kirk wins.

sisko might have been a memorable captain if his actor weren't so poor, while steward, mulgrew, shatner, and bakula went on to play multiple roles in theatre, film and tv, brooks narrates documentaries. janeway wins, no doubt. bigger balls than the four gentlemen combined, and she managed to bring her ship home. don't know the statistics, but i feel the casualty rate on voyager was a lot lower than under the other captains.

Because of good timing, I think Sisko got to do what many series actors wish their characters could get -- and that's some creativity and range in character.

Like in "Blaze of Glory", Sisko gets to do a character change, and became a ruthless jerk, yet later returns to the normal person we all know.

All because he had a good reason to. (wink, wink) ;)

In Beyond the Stars, he gets to have a breakdown in another man's body, while still being Sisko.

And over some serious subject matter.

In the Pale Moonlight he tricks the Romulans into going to war, talks about it, admits he would do it all over again if he had to, then erases the log.

However you feel about those things, you don't forget them.

Picard also had some intense moments.

It's all like different flavors of ice cream..

Sisko is awesome, and so is Kirk. But I like Picard best. He has everything that makes Sisko and Kirk awesome, and then he also has what makes him awesome. And don't anybody dare say he was a weakling, you don't become the Klingon Arbiter of Succession for nothing. :klingon: But I wouldn't say any Captain is "best" or "worst."

Except for Janeway. I hate Janeway.

While Deep Space Nine is my favorite of the Trek sequel series, Picard remains my favorite of the captains. Steward imbued Picard with such a calm, rational sense of command that there was never any doubt that he was a true leader.

Which is not to say that Sisko didn't have his finer qualities. But if given a choice as a Starfleet crewman, I think I'd much rather be serving under Picard.

I think he's a fine captain, but ultimately Sisko was far more loyal to the Bajoran people's faith and the Prophets than Starfleet or the Federation. What would be a close tie between Sisko and Picard is, in my opinion, a decisive victory for Picard.

Sisko as a character got more rounded characterisation than any of the other captains (the great writing between Sisko and Jake helped) but best captain? No way, that would be Picard.
