How goes the Dominion?

Hi.

I haven't been keeping up with much of the post-Nemesis books - I'm more interested in Vanguard, the post-Terra Prime ENT series, and stand-alones like The Buried Age and Burning Dreams, by and large - but seeing some of the discussions about the topic made me wonder:

What's been going on for the Dominion lately?

How much of a look has been given to how the Gamma Quadrant superpower has been developing in the aftermath of the war, both in terms of how it is faring in Gamma proper, and how it relates to the Alpha/Beta powers in the postwar era?

Did they play a role in the sequence of events shown in stories like Destiny?

Do they have a role in this Typhon Pact, or are they more inclined to either be somewhat more sympathetic to the Fed-led alliance... or would they merely sit things out on their side of the wormhole?

And are there any upcoming stories involving the Dominion on the cards?

There has not been that much on the Dominion recently but what we do know is:
That the Great Link has disbanded itself and the Founders have fled though out the Galaxy.

I don't understand why this hasn't been followed up on yet. Especially since the DS9-R timeline is so far behind the rest of the novels that whatever happened with the Great Link might be over by now.

I do so agree with you on this, all we know at the moment is that:
is that Odo and Laas are the last two Founders left in charge of the Dominion.

I don't understand why this hasn't been followed up on yet.

1) The choice was made to first follow up on the other huge shocker from the end of Olympus Descending in Warpath.

2) That story was not completed in Warpath, and was picked up in Fearful Symmetry.

3) The original author of Fearful Symmetry ran into issues, and the book was thus delayed about a year.

4) That storyline still wasn't completed in FS, and is thus being continued in The Soul Key.

5) On top of all this, the editor of the DS9 novel was laid off last fall, and all his work has fallen to a new editor.

And now, you should understand why the Dominion storyline has not been followed up on yet.

I know, it's just the worst bad luck ever for a story. Almost...

And beyond all this- is the story line something you want wrapped up fast?
Read the spoilers if you want, and then tell me- does it not look like something interesting is building that is going to require time and skilled writing??

The current "problem" from OD to FS must be resolved, but the second Dominion issue in OD and Warpath touched on it too, while hampered by the early delay is something that I hope will be pretty interesting over the next... 2 years anyway.

I'm dying to know what's going on, but I want it to be great.

The answer to the original question is:
We're awesome, and winning at everything.
Sunshine and puppies... :bolian:

^ of course you are.
And if you don't believe it, well just tell it to the Jem'hadar!:p

Exactly.

We've been around +2000 years... that minor skirmish with the AQ was like... I don't know? Dealing with a preteen temper tantrum?
But we play with the Hirogen for fun...

I mean, to most in the Dominion, according to Goron'agar, the Founders are practically a myth anyway.

I see - it does seem a shame to have little reference to the Dominion in the likes of Destiny, since if the Borg captured DS9, they could use the Idran Anomaly to cause the Gamma Quadrant some serious problems...

...and given the rise of the Typhon Pact, one would imagine the Dominion having a very keen interest in who might one day challenge the Federation for control of, or access to, the Bajoran terminus of the wormhole.

To be honest the Dominion may have other concerns over in the GQ which may preclude interaction with the AQ, such as:
The threat from the Ascendancy crusade

The Borg invasion never got as far as the Bajoran Wormhole. There's no reason why anyone in the GQ would've even been aware of the invasion.

Well, other than wanting to leave the subject wide open for writers of upcoming DS9 novels, in the sight of Destiny... I don't think you could get a fleet from the Dominion to help in time? Even with the wormhole, Dominion space is a bit away, isn't it?

If the Federation had rallied everyone immediately when the Borg problem started, it went on for a while, so Dominion help could have come. But in the end, during Destiny, I don't think there would have been time to get the fleets in. After all, didn't think think that getting a fleet from Cardassia was stretching it a bit?

What is that - and why would it impede upon the kind of intelligence-gathering operations that Dominion operatives would likely be running in order to keep tabs on the Feds and others?

Unless there was some level of trade/subspace contact/diplomatic exchange occurring at the time - plus there may well still be Founders undercover on Earth and other Alpha/Beta worlds.

Bajor - and the wormhole - is closer to the Federation core than that particular world, plus would it not be reasonable to assume the Dominion would have some standing fleet in or near the Idran system by now?

^I guess you haven't been following the DS9 post-finale books. As of Olympus Descending, I don't think the Dominion is in much of a position to worry about what's going on in the Alpha Quadrant.

*checks Memory Alpha and Beta regarding OD*

Well, that's just great...

...but one would wonder about whether or not
there could be either some post-Link government to inherit the Dominion infrastructure, or have some means of re-convening the Link, by the time the events of Destiny or the Typhon Pact stories take place.

One would also like an answer... preferably in a large, tome-ish format...

Fictitiously yours, Trent Roman
