How does the MMOG work?

Ok...I have never even looked into one of these MMOG (not even sure if I got that right) games like Warcraft and what not. But I might want to play the new Trek one once it comes out. How do the work? I mean, is the software a free download and then you pay a monthly fee to play? Do you pay for the software and a monthly fee? How much per month do the ussually run? THANKS!

the general model is something like 19.95 initial purchase and first month free, and 14.95 recurring monthly
sometimes you can get deals at a lower price but it varies depending on the publisher etc . . .

You'll pay for the software first then you get the first month free, after that a typical MMO runs $15 a month (less if you choose a longer payment plan), the only time you'd have to buy more software is when there is an expansion pack, that happens once every two years typically.

The software (client) itself is free. Pretty much all MMO companies offer free downloads of the full client after a few months at most. This is largely because, just by the nature of the beasts, they got a lot of updates, and it takes longer to update a client than it takes to download the full thing (funky, but true).

What you're paying for when you pay the $20/$40 initial price is for the account, basically.
