How does Calypso happen?

No, not yet, though I am sure that will be an interesting study. But, Star Trek keeps demonstrating that fans appear to want connections back to past works. The Wrath of Khan, The Undiscovered Country with its deliberate connection to TNG and Worf's ancestor defending Kirk. First Contact and connecting back to one of the most highly rated TNG episodes. No, causality doesn't equal causation, but the parallels occur often enough that a surface level observation would seem to indicate the connection.

Now, there is clearly more to that but that is not how Hollywood executives always think.

Sorry, but they didn’t talk to this fan. I’m not interested in connecting dots or picking up where things left off 20 years before. And even if I did, it will inevitably not live up to my expectations, or some new guy will just want to put his ‘spin’ on things and mistakenly believe his spin will be loved and accepted because he thinks his stuff is so great. Not even the original creators are immune to that. Just look at George Lucas as a case in point. That’s why it irks me every time I see someone wanting ENT back or DS9 back. We got Picard back, and I think Chabon and Stewart absolutely ruined the character. That’s just my opinion, of course. But I didn’t ask for Picard to come back, nor did I want that. I also didn’t want another prequel that takes place 10 years before TOS. But I guess those producers who think past connections are so great didn’t poll me.

I want something new. The producers of the Macross Japanese anime series have it right. Once one of their series ends, they expressly do not continue with it, go back to it, or use any characters from it in succeeding shows. The one time they did that was a total disaster. And although I’m sure there are some longtime fans who would love to see Hikaru Ichijyo, Misa Hayase and Minmay again, IMHO it’s
better to leave their fates to the imagination and move on to newer stories and characters, and the producers apparently agree with me.

Nor to this fan but money talks loudly. And many fans want to see their favorites back because it brings a tinge of comfort. That is the nature of entertainment is to provide people some measure of emotional investment. Well, what can demonstrate that investment more than wanting them back? And Star Trek has demonstrated repeatedly that it does not want to go forward but to keep looking at its past and pat itself on the back for it.

I want something new.

I do too. Which is why Discovery was doing well for me, up until a certain point. But new is risk. And right now we have businesses that are extremely risk adverse and a fan base that is even more risk adverse.

I would agree with those producers but sadly that is not taking hold with American productions.

I can kind of see where you're coming from, as almost every new Trek series lately has to include someone from a past series, and not just as a cameo in the pilot. I don't have a problem with it myself, I loved seeing O'Brien and Worf in DS9, but Kurtzman-era Trek is supposed be all about variety.

Kurtzman era is closer to the TOS era in the idea that it is willing to play in the sandbox more of Star Trek storytelling types. TOS, more than a lot of the other series, was more willing to play in the horror stories, or romance or romantic adventure. While they are not varying the characters as much I think there is more variety now in terms of storytelling styles.

This might still happen. It'd be a heck of a cliffhanger if Discovery herself (Zora) is abandoned in the cliffhanger for some reason and all the crew go their separate ways.

I don't know if it matters, but the events of the Cage happen before Discovery 2nd Season. Spock has been on the ship awhile. I think the short trek Q&A is the first canonical day of Spock on the job aboard the Enterprise.

I think that’s what Ray was talking about. Number One tells Spock to keep his voice down when he first comes aboard the Enterprise in Q&A. More an Easter Egg than an arc.
