How do you rate the Voyager characters?

Ensign Johnson

Lieutenant Commander
Red Shirt
I was wondering who everyone's favourite and least favourite characters were. Who do you love? Who do you hate? Who do you feel indifferent to? Also how do they hold up to your other Star Trek favourites?

Love

Lt. B'Elanna Torres
Lt. Tom Paris
The Doctor
Lt. Commander Tuvok
Kes

Hate

Ensign Harry Kim - he was played as so green then he'd piss and moan about not getting more responsibilities/promotions, then when he'd get more responsibilities he'd piss and moan about having too many responsibilities or he'd fuck the mission up beyond all recognition and mommy Kathy would have to come bail him out. He was just portrayed as a giant douche after the first couple of seasons

Indifferent

Commander Chakotay
Neelix
Captain Kathryn Janeway
Seven of Nine

Sticking to main characters only:

1) The Doctor - What a great development from the beginning of the series to the end. Picardo's performance was equally great to Spiner's as Data in my opinion. Both of those would be in my top 10 list for all trek main characters. Generally, an episode revolving around him was exceptional.

2) Tom Paris - Likely not a popular choice here, but that character just resonates with me. I could see myself being very similar to Paris if I were in that position, although not as good with the ladies. I like how he started out as the rebel who just wanted to do things his way, and slowly developed into, after a major setback or two, one of the most valuable members of the crew. I think B'Elanna was quite similar in how she developed, so they made a quite natural pairing IMO. At least they got one love relationship right on that show.

3) B'Elanna Torres - As stated above, I liked her for many of the same reasons I liked Tom. She was a really interesting character who went through quite an evolution throughout the run of the show. Cute too, especially after they backed off on some of the makeup (those original eyebrows were too much!).

4) Seven of Nine - Her character brought a whole new life to the show. I think I actually got a bit "Borged out" by the time it was all over, but still, a lot of those Seven episodes were really good. Although her face had some weird shit going on up there, her body wasn't hard to look at.

5) Kathryn Janeway - She's the reason I rejected the show at first. Not at all because she's a woman, but because I couldn't stand her voice (sounded like a 3 pack-a-day smoker)! I learned to love it though. Overall I really like the character, despite the fact that her moral compass needs some serious calibration. That's the main reason she's not higher on this list. Like Chakotay with the FO's, she would be low on my Captains list, although I really do like her for the most part.

6) Chakotay - I really liked him most of the time. I thought he did a fair job at trying to steer a borderline bipolar Captain in the right direction. He'd still rank low on my first officer list though. I got pretty sick of hearing about the bones of his people.

7) Neelix - I do not dislike this character anywhere near the way most fans seem to. Post-Kes, I really enjoyed him. I found him to be quite loyal, friendly, and a valuable member of the crew. His feet are pretty gross though.

8) Tuvok - Decent character. Vulcans typically are not my favorite characters though, as they are so "wooden". A sense of humor is important to me, and their lack of that does nothing to endear them in my eyes.

9) Kes - She was cute and had some interesting stuff from time to time. Well she was cute until they tried to age her with that funky hairstyle, and she looked freakishly skinny towards the end. Although I get what they were trying to do, her return in Fury was still atrocious IMO. It just didn't work for me at all. She was back to looking better though than she did at the end of her main run.

10) Harry Kim - Poor guy. Does anyone love this character? We should feel sorry for him. He died and was replaced by an alternate Harry, and also went back in time and saved the entire crew from death, yet he gets no credit. He has to watch while non-Starfleet criminal Tom Paris gets promoted, demoted, and promoted again! Wow, and he ends the show at the same Ensign rank he started out with. Ouch! Overall, he is pretty annoying though. Not someone I'd want to hang out with.

As far as how they stack up to other Trek series characters, I think the Doctor would be the only one to make my top 10. But overall, most of them would fair pretty well I think. Harry Kim would beat out Mayweather and Deanna Troi at least. :techman:

My overall favourites are probably Tom and B'Elanna. I find them believable as people and I liked their relationship.

I also liked Seven and the Doctor. They're the best able to carry an episode, but I had some issues with how they developed towards the end of the show.

Janeway and Tuvok were well-acted, but the characters rarely came alive for me, not bad characters though.

Kes had potential, as shown by a few shining moments, but I don't think she was that well-written and she became repetitive for me.

Neelix started off very annoying and mellowed to merely quite annoying. Still had his moments, though. Phillips is a pretty good actor, which redeemed things somewhat.

I found Chakotay and Kim forgettable.

8) Tuvok - Decent character. Vulcans typically are not my favorite characters though, as they are so "wooden". A sense of humor is important to me, and their lack of that does nothing to endear them in my eyes.

This was my first impression of Tuvok but the more I saw of him the funnier I found him. He is so sarcastic, he has the same dry sense of humour that Seven has. I especially like Tukok's sarcastic remarks to Paris.

Love
Janeway - The bun, the voice, antagonising aliens, breaking the prime directive, checking out Seven's boobs, slouching in her chair, not needing Chakotay to blow up the ship, saving the ship single handedly.... I could go on.
The Doctor - I initially found the Doctor arrogant and annoying but he grew on me and by the end of the series I couldn't believe I didn't always love him. He's one of the funniest characters and he had some great episodes.
Seven of Nine - I always have liked female characters that seem cold and confident but then you realise that underneath they are kind and vulnerable. I already mentioned I liked her dry sarcasm and I think she's had some of the best episodes.
Tuvok - Sometimes Tuvok annoys me, because for someone who isn't supposed to show emotion he can be awfully grumpy. But I can forgive all that for his sarcasm, I really think Vulcans could make good comedians.
Torres - I can't help but love a strong female character, I love how early season Torres clashed with Janeway but was ultimately won over with Janeway's charm. I liked her less as she mellowed out and married Paris.

Hate
Tom Paris - Like the Doctor I found Paris arrogant and annoying, unlike the Doctor he didn't grow on me. He also deserves to be hated for making Fair Haven. Also he seems to think he's funny but I disagree.
Chakotay - I actually kind of liked him at the start when he was more Marquis but he got boring, all he did was told Janeway not to do things and mostly got ignored. I really got annoyed at Chakotay when he started dating Seven after years of telling Janeway not to rescue her.

Indifferent
I don't really get why Neelix is so hated, he was annoying at the start but improved once Kes left. Kes just isn't the sort of character I like, she's too sweet and cheerful (yuk). I found Harry Kim pointless for the most part, he did give me a few laughs but I was always laughing at him and not with him.

I've only really watched Voyager and DS9 all the way through (I have seen all of TOS but that was ages ago) so out of Voyager and DS9 I liked Janeway the best followed by Major Kira.

With only two exceptions, I like the Voyager characters more than the characters in any other Trek series. They just work for me. They did from the start. Janeway and Tuvok are at the top of the list but the others aren't far behind. I never got the Neelix dislike, either; he could be annoying but plenty of real people are annoying, too. :D

The exceptions are Chakotay and Harry. Harry was flat-out boring. Chuckles was, to put it as politely as possible, just a waste of space.

I agree with Orac Zen-- I find these characters, as a crew, perhaps the richest and most memorable of all the series. It could have been done much better, but there was a real sense of developing perspectives and deepening relationships as the years went on.

Kes was probably my least favorite-- I just found her a little self-important for somebody who was two years old. Kim ended up being kind of arrested, and Chakotay just faded away in the end. Neelix was annoying and I loved that about the show: that people who were flawed, and anxious, and ungorgeous were treated with respect and were valued members of the crew. He was beautifully portrayed.

There was no one I hated, and I was sorry that any of the characters were left by the wayside.

Rolling with Orac Zen and retrograde loop on this one. Say what you will about VOY's writing, the characters are what made this series endure for a lot of us fans. Some I like less than others, of course, but they're a group I dig overall. The family theme throughout the show was huge, and I loved it.

In order of favorite to not-quite-as-favorite, I have:

Janeway - She is my favorite fictional character ever created in anything. Ever. I turn into a starry-eyed fangirl watching her. I have considered insurance for my Janeway action figure.
Tuvok - His relationship with Janeway is awesome. I love, love, love good J/Tu scenes. Also, he's Vulcan, and I heart Vulcans like mad. Best Trek aliens, IMO. He's got a great dry wit, and a bit of a buried dark side. Cool guy.
Tom - He's... he's Tom Paris. He's angsty, he always gets folded, spindled, and mutated, and enjoys spending time drinking beer and watching hockey on an old TV set. He had good character growth, too.
Doctor - This guy had the best character growth in the series, IMO. Rarely does a Doc episode fall flat with me. Darkling is really his only stinker, and at least he runs around in a hooded cloak and cool contacts to make up for the dumb plot.
B'Elanna - Angsty, Klingon, badass, and good with machines to boot. It's always fun watching how she runs Engineering.
Harry - Nightingale is pretty rotten for his character, but he's got some other episodes that show his inner badass and loyalty, methinks. The Chute, Future's End, Timeless, and Killing Game come to mind. He can be a doof, but he's also a guy I'd want being my friend.
Chakotay - Yeah, his character got the shaft, but I like his backstory. I think I enjoy the character he could have been, although there are some moments in the series where they do get this guy right. There's a brief bit in Coda where he openly weeps, and it gets me every single time. He is also pretty cool in Distant Origin.
Kes - Some people don't like her voice, but I always did. I think if they had been a little more gradual about developing her psychic powers, she could have stayed on through the series.
Neelix - His obvious crush on Janeway was kind of endearing, IMO. He didn't get enough serious episodes, though, which is a shame. People hate him, but I think the series needed a character like him.
Seven - Nowadays, I like her okay. But it took me a long time to come to that point. She ganked a few too many episodes between Season 4 and mid Season 6, but I will admit there are many Seven episodes I do enjoy.

Janeway - I liked her, didnt love her, she ran hot and cold imo.

Doctor - Great character, really grew a lot over the course of the series

Kes - Bored me to tears, sorry

Chakotay - he was ok, Beltran was capiable of a lot more than what he was given though, he was much better in "caretaker" before they chopped his nuts off

Tuvok - good character, hard to play a vulcan, did well.

Seven - eugh, hated her, worst character ever in trek for me.

Torres - great character, brought some much needed fire to the crew

Kim - he was ok, not brilliant but not as bad as some make out

Neelix - i liked him, bit of a clown but provided some comic relief

Paris - my favorite character on the show, i thought he was under-utilised though

Overall i thought the cast was weak, but they did ok, i think the material they were given was not the best frankly, i did like the show though, just not as much as others

From Favorite to Not-favorite . . .
1. The Doctor - excellent acting and character develoment, hilarious attitude
2. Seven of Nine - liked the "outsider" viewpoint
3. Reginald Barclay! Hey it was only a few episodes, but it counts!
4. B'elanna Torres - loved her Klingon/human identity crises
5. Tom Paris - good character development, corny but believable
6. Janeway - very strong, positive, confident character
7. Neelix - obnoxious, but good character, and well-acted
8. Tuvok - okay, but can't ever compare to Spock
9. Kes - adorable outfits!
10. Chakotay - underdeveloped, lukewarm personality
11. Harry Kim - BOOOORRRRIIINGGG!!!! come on, he was too innocent to be real; The Chute was good, though

Love:
The Doctor
Seven of Nine

Hate:
Everyone else (except Tuvok. He's all right.)

My categories are labeled a bit differently.

"I adore you so much I have lost count of the reasons."
Janeway

"You are pretty damn awesome."
Tuvok
Seven

"I'd go fishin' with you."
Paris

"You're a bit dull and kind of a dunce, but I still don't really dislike you."
Chakotay

"You're generally creepy and annoying but on rare occasions, I approve of you."
Neelix

"Oh, yeah, I almost forgot about you, you're alright, though."
Kes

"Usually, you're OK, but in some episodes, I hit the mute button every time I see you prepare to speak."
Torres
The Doctor

"I feel embarrassed on behalf of the actor who played you."
Kim

As for how they hold up compared to other Trek characters - I think all the series had a mix of good and bad characters. I can think of examples from other shows to keep everyone on this list company in the categories I've listed.

I've always said I love VOY for the characters (and DS9 for the politics). So here we go..

I Love Trek Because..

7 of 9.

My Favorite Trek Character.

Wow. I love all her story lines, she is really the only "becoming human" Trek character I've resonated with as far as that being her journey. I couldn't care less if an android wants to be human but 7's journey to reclaim that which was ripped from her (after they exploited whatever bits they found useful) is gripping. She is also very funny and has some fantastic eps.

Kathryn Janeway

A fantastic multifaceted captain, full of LIFE. Quick witted, strong, surprises you! Always, always interesting. I love her.

The Doctor

Funniest character in Trek. Worked beautifully with the rest of the crew, constant injection (get it?) of humor into every scene.. yet pulled off what I would have said was impossible for my tastes.. believable pathos in an artificial life form. The Doctor is a class act and always a pleasure to watch.

Under Appreciated!!

Harry Kim. Had far more development than the B set on ENT. You had Libby, alien romance, alien theology, alien fake identity, The Chute (slashiest. ep. ever.), Timeless which is my favorite VOY ep.. Harry is a great guy. He's smart, humble, hot and sincere. He's trustworthy, curious and warmhearted. Give him more eps and he would be in the Love category.

Liked:

Neelix. He serves his purpose. Good scenes with Tuvok.

Tuvok. Excellent Vulcan. Dry wit always appreciated. Too bad he wasn't used more, could have done with more Tuvok and less Paris. His Janeway relationship brought a lot to the show.

Chakotay. Always seemed to be willing him to do or be more.. I think much of what I like about him I've read into him and probably wasn't there. Still, I like him. He's important to Janeway and SHE likes him, relies on him.. and this makes for some great scenes. I also found some of his different conclusions to Janeway believable and interesting.

Never warmed to, YAWN

Tom Paris. Wouldn't be his friend past a drink in a crowd. Wouldn't date him. Wouldn't want to rely on him for.. anything. Just not my kind of guy. The sort of guy I find quite boring IRL I guess. No I do not want to hear about your old cars, old music, eating habits or how fast you can go in your little space ship.

Belanna Torres. Just kind of blah, feels like pretend Klingon rage when she's mad. Good match with Tom but still not very interesting to me. Don't dislike her, just never think about her. I enjoyed Janeway's coaxing her out of her defensiveness though.

Disliked:

Kes. Really want to slap her most of the time. I cannot STAND her voice. I am also continually and ever bemused by those that deem her "hot". She is as hot as milk. I can't imagine eating lunch with her, I would find her whole preachy attitude very irritating.

In order

LOVE

More then any: Janeway FAV OF ALL TIME!!:techman:
Then there is: Torres (I relate with her)
Doctor
Tuvok

LIKE
Paris
Seven of nine
Chakotay
Kes
Harry
Neelix

FAV COMBO PLATER

#1 Paris, Torres, and Harry side of rice
#2 Janeway and Chakotay Steamed
#3 Tuvok and Neelix served with a spicy brown sauce
#4 Janeway and Paris ragoon
#5 Janeway and Seven on a bed of lo-mein
#6 Doctor and side kick of the day... stir fry

Love, love, love Janeway.

Seven is next on that list.

I really can't stand Chakotay, Neelix, or Harry Kim.

I'm pretty much indifferent to the rest of them.

#1..... is there any question? if there is, look at my "name".
#2..... B'Elanna Torres
#3..... Seven of Nine
#4..... tied with #5 Chakotay and Tuvok.
#6..... tied with #7 The EMH and Kes.
#8..... Tom Paris
#9..... Harry Kim

As for the "ranking", I wouldn't put much stock in anyone from #2-9.... because I like them all, and "that's the truth."

Signed... "Edith Ann", who's still just 4 years old.

I like all the characters, but when they overdo a storyline with their characters, it's like nails on a chalk board.

Like the Doctor for example, I like his character.

I hated when he's in those episodes when he's loudly arguing with someone over something, or "the emergency command hologram" bit.

Kes, liked; The episode where she gets taken over by the "spirit" of a tyrant.

Hated ; her super natural powers storyline...

Tuvok; He's likable in general. Played a Vulcan well.

Hate- the episodes when he gets possessed by someone, loses his emotion, cetera, cetera..

B'Elana-liked; smart ass comments, half Maqui attitude.

Hate-she needed to lighten up already!

Some of her storyline background was also little silly to me. She had a least one year of academy training which qualifies her to run engineering and outrank academy graduates.

Neelix-liked ; I think he was believable as a moral booster. He did it well I think.

Borg children- jumped the shark moment...
