How do you look at trek?

Tyjos Azari

Well I wonder....

How many of you look at the cultures in star trek through alien eyes?

Or do you just stick with your regular human viewpoint?

I see the Federation as nothing more than a bloated empire that's expanded to everywhere spouting off their values to everyone and changing worlds to meet with what they deem acceptable to them.

That's an example right there but I just never really could be part of the Federation it looks fun but it feels weak....I feel more towards the Romulan/Cardassian way of doing things.

I have found if you look at Trek through the alien viewpoint....it will make it look even better.

After all it's not always about the Humans and their federation.

-I do this because of the years I have crafted a character for a fanfic from an advanced culture that really wouldn't hesitate to blow up a pathetic mudball of a planet like Earth....it helps to see things from a different standpoint other than the usual Human Arrogance that we see in all these sci-fi series.

I look at trek as an entertaining sci-fi show with space ships and a moral lesson at the end of the episode. :p

I personally have to give the Federation a lot of credit. Sure, they're not perfect and do now and again meddle in the affairs of other cultures but they still consistenly uphold the virtues and ethics that they were founded on. The prime directive itself shows how mature the Federation is. Sure it's meant to protect them as well as other cultures, but when you've got millions if inhabited worlds in the cosmos, non-interference is a hard thing to achieve

To me, there is no difference between the Federation and the governmental structures we have in the real world. My goodness, with so many different cultures and so many different viewpoints, conflict is to be expected...it's the only way to arrive at one unified ideal or law.

And what's wrong with Earth? Why would you want to destroy a blue beauty like this planet, anyway?

It's not earth, it's the species currently occupying the planet....if only it was just another random M-Class planet out there....

but eh....

It's Star Trek...humans I guess in the 24th Century I hope are less annoying than they are now....

I don't know. I've always thought of the Romulans as stuck up, arrogant, and deceptive.

But hey, who knows. Maybe behind closed doors they like to play with fluffy Romulan kittens or something.

Then again, we are only seeing one side of them. Maybe the cooks or the guys who run mining ships are a lot more friendly.

Our goverments and businesses are run by habitual liars, and evil people. Our oceans are heavily polluted, our land is rapidly dwindling under constant construction, and me and only a handful of other people should be allowed to live, but if I did anything about that, I would be the one to go to prison. Where's the logic in that??

There's nothing beautiful here.

I have found, that if you look at Star Trek through the alien viewpoint. It OPENS UP much more than just the "I like the Federation! They're cool in Star Trek!" view.

After all seeing how the Aliens view the Federation, even the dissident group like Terra Prime adds so much more to the experience.

Well said.

I hope that's supposed to be funny. Because if it isn't, your arrogance is part of the problems on Earth.

I'm not arrogant. Just fed up with idiots and their stupidity.

Also, having a bad day.....

Don't try to tell me you haven't had one of those.

Overall I also think the Federation does a good job considering what an enormous task it is to please, or at least not offend, so many different cultures.

It would be fun to get a behind-the-scene glimpse of alien cultures, like a Vulcan farmer or Klingon street-sweeper. Understandably, most of the aliens in Trek hold high positions but it would be interesting to see how the "little people" live on these worlds. I think it would add more dimensions to these cultures.

Didn't Kira have to go convince a "little guy" farmer to move from somewhere on Bajor? Actor Brian Keith maybe? Fuzzy memory.

Here's my problem with people who overly aggrandize Romulans, Carsassians, people who wouldn't hesitate to blow up the Earth: you're saying you don't like yourself. Your on the planet too, and like it or not, whether you realize how much or not, this planet, its people, and its "sins" are far more you than those of another.

How DARE they think they have the right, just because they think they're so cool to be Romulans or Cardassians or whomever to harm you, me, and us?

I love the Romulans. I get fans' love of their self-regard and superciliousness. But I'd want the the Federation star fleet getting my back if I had to be in a room with one.

It's just a science fiction series that's all, nothing to really start crazy arguments over.

But still it helps to look at things from different perspectives. After all if anyone can remember Azetbor's line on Star Trek 6 The Undiscovered Country about "If you could only look at yourselves in Alien."

Star Trek just is a well written, and well thought out and well done series enough that anyone can enjoy it. Just as long as you don't go insane over trying to analyze Federation/Romulan/Klingon Relations......

Bingo. And that's really the bottom line isn't it?

Exactly!

It's a great sci-fi series and very enjoyable to watch. And the discussions on fictional things in it while are enlightening they do seem to get too crazy for my taste.

But that is all Trek is, is a great way to pass the time.

Besides I like the fandom much better.....and the fans are very eager to get into detailed debates over the issues in the series and that is what I like.
