How did they communicate in 'Communicator'?

Once their communicators were taken away, so no UT, how did Archer and Reed talk to the alien soldiers?

Was the UT in the communicator? I thought ENT had it as a separate device at first, then omitted it altogether from the prop arsenal.

Perhaps Archer and pals already had implants capable of translating any language already in the databanks or previously deciphered by the bulkier handheld devices / the ship's computer?

True, it was separate in the one where they met the woman doctor on the pre-warp planet, I was being charitable by presuming that they integrated it with the communicator (esp as they understood T'Pol's message). Either way, they had all their technology taken from them - how did they communicate?

There is no indication of such implants in any Trek.

I was thinking the same thing watching Voyager's "The Chute" the other day, in which Paris and Kim are locked in a prison with lots of aliens without any equipment at all. I guess they lucked out that the aliens just happened to speak English.
