How could they have made DISC fit in more with THE CAGE?

Discovery already feels like "The Cage", with zoom ins on the Bridge from outside and blue glowy star things like the mycelial network, but there are some differences too.
Maybe if they had made the Shenzhou look more like the Enterprise, than have the Discovery look different because its newer it would have been less abrupt?

Or make Admiral Anderson's Europa a Connie and blow it up to indicate that this "ain't old Star Trek"!

I always felt Captain Sponeman in the Mirror Universe should have been Mirror Pike since we never see his ship anyway.

Or, if the Spore Drive malfunctions, someone should yell "SWITCH TO ROCKETS, WE'RE BLASTING OUT!"
And when Captain Georgiou and Michael beam off the Shenzhou, Saru should have yelled "THE WOMEN!"

Because they are setting it in the Prime Timeline right after the Cage, they clearly have stories to tell in that time. Otherwise they would just make it a reboot.

Oops, you beat me to it, BillJ, but yes!
I wouldn't have a problem with it if it wasn't the Prime Timeline.
But it clearly is.

I've yet to see any reason why any of the Discovery story had to be told one year after "The Cage"?

But it clearly is.

I've yet to see anything that clearly defines it as the Prime timeline. If anything, every indication is that Discovery is its own thing and using the "Prime" timeline designation to keep fandom from bitching like they did during the Abrams films.

That's true. They could have set it one year earlier! Or in the 2270s where PLANET OF THE TITANS is supposed to be anyway, to fit in with the Discovery Design.

The references to Spock are based on the Prime Timeline, not the Kelvin version, so theres no reason why that's another timeline.
The Giant Window zoom ins are just like The Cage. And all the blue glowy stuff.
And it violates cannon sometimes, but so does the Cage.
ALL DECKS PREPARE FOR HYPERDRIVE, TIME WARP FACTOR...

Well they could have done it in black and white standard def to make it look like the cage historial record.

Well the Georgiou/Pike interactions are amazing in the novel Desperate Hours!
Lorca seems pretty sexist after that last episode, though.

No. But they might have shown the tiniest bit of interest in the aesthetic as defined in "The Cage"/TOS. There are a couple of examples that show they could've more closely followed the aesthetic in the hand props and the Shenzhou bridge chairs. For some reason, they decided to go completely off the rails in set design and the Klingons.

I think that was the worst Trek novel I ever read. So much fanwank. I wanted something that would define Georgiou and the Shenzhou on its own merit.

I think the new sets look great so I'm glad they went that route instead of trying to replicate something from the 60s. That works great for STC but not for something on a major streaming service.

Yeah, I want a Georgiou standalone series, with the Shenzhou too. She is awesome, and that refers to both of them, an awesome ship and an awesome captain. But I personally loved the novel, and I like fanwank.
