How can we introduce sci fi to the younger generation?

I don’t have kids of myself but have a niece and nephew I’m close with and I don’t tried to introduce them to some of the things I like to mixed results. However, what can be more rewarding I’ve found is when they introduce you to something they like that you’re not familiar with.

Aren't some stuff usually loved over several generations? "Star Wars" and "Star Trek" wouldn't be what they are if they didn't capture the imagination of several generations in great numbers. It's easy to understand why kids might not get into the average stuff. I wouldn't expect kids for example get all excited over "Sliders" or even "Quantum Leap" but it does seem weird to see the big things be resisted like Classic Trek and Classic Star Wars. Granted maybe it's just that kids now have more options than previous generations.

The big three series (Trek, Wars, and Who) are popular because they don't die away. They have been re-issued or re-booted for new generations. For Trek it was the movies in the early eighties, the spin off series in the eighties and nineties, etc. From these incarnations fans rediscovered the original series. For SW it was the prequel movies. Now it is the current stream of movies. For many kids these are the definitive Star Wars with the OT only being discovered afterward. Other kids met Star Wars through The Clone Wars. Doctor Who returned in 2005 and has been popular ever since.

Or my parents telling me that Buck Rogers in the 25th century was inferior to the original serials.
As for Star Wars, I remember showing my son the original trilogy and we couldn't even make it past the first movie on the initial try because he was devastated the Stormtroopers were bad.

Being off work last night--I was able to see an episode of Buck Rogers on MeTV.

Talk about jarring! The Soap Opera Effect made it look like it was shot on videotape.

As a side note, my son now loves seventies music because of the GOTG movies. I tried to get him interested in more contemporary music and he wasn't interested. I was so proud.
