House and Cuddy hooking up?

I've been reviewing some of the past seasons' episodes this past week (mostly S3-S5) and watching the interaction between the characters. For the most part there was a lot of antagonism between Cuddy and House in the first season and little "real" attraction. House mostly seemed annoyed by her and her meddling in his practice and she was much more administrator-rly. Second season flirted with the 'ship more and it finally came to much more of a head in S5, following House's outburst in the lobby (where he announced to the whole room he and Cuddy slept together (which ended up being a hallucination House was having due to a toxic reaction from his Vicodin), House stays for a few months in a mental hospital and when he comes back to work Cuddy has mostly moved on and is in a relationship with Lucas. (House's PI friend.)

End of this season, Cuddy admits her love for House (even though she knows he could be bad for her) has dumped Lucas and as the season ends it seems that a relationship will finally develop between the two, House even shuns his beloved vicodin for her. BTS information from writers and producers has said that this wasn't a dream or another hallucination and that it "really" happened and something they're going to explore in the next season. To see how the two will maintain their respective professions (House being an authority-shirking ass and Cuddy being his boss.) Some fans have said this was a huge Jump The Shark moment for the show as the development makes no sense and even seemed Fanfiction-like.

I, for one, loved this development. Although I think that Cuddy is way too good for House the two actors have a pretty good chemistry as do the two characters and they've been flirting with a relationship between these two for several seasons. I think it'd be interesting to see how these two maintain a relationship between one another and how House deals with his girlfriend being his boss and how Cuddy continues to meddle in House's practice and how House continues to meddle in Cuddy's administrative duties. I think it'll be fascinating to watch. And as much as the writers on this show waiver a lot between "brilliant", "good" and face-planning I think they could pull this off.

Others have said that this would be a better development for a series finale. Which I also disagree with. I hate it when shows do that, it give the audience no chance to watch the relationship they've invested seasons into seeing. I think this could be good and fun. I just hope they don't break them up as, well, that'd likely mean they'd then never get together permanently (unless they do a Ross and Rachel thing) and as Wilson once told House that he (House) figures "if it can't work with Cuddy it can't work with anyone."

I think it's great and I can't wait to see what happens next. I don't see their relationship being easy. It'll have its share of ups and downs, maybe mini-breakups. But I'm hoping they'll stick together in the end.

Until the last season, I never believed what the writers were going for was real love between the characters. I always felt House flirted because it annoyed Cuddy, and his flirting was part of a patriarchy influenced power struggle.

It doesn't feel real to me, I feel the character of Cuddy to be quite boring, and I am not looking forward to the inevitable "House takes care of the baby," "Cuddy struggles with how to balance professional with personal life" and the back and forth of can they or can't they make it work. You know these episodes are gonna' happen, and I have a fear they're not going to do it well.

I vote for Jump The Shark/Nuke The Fridge.

House is in a coma.

He's buried unconscious in the rubble of the collapse. Nothing that took place after that point in the story was real.

I'm not much of a "shipper," but I think it's a good choice to make a real change in House's life. His self-centered, obnoxious schtick was entertaining for a few years, but it got tired, and they made the right choice this past season by giving him a breakthrough and making him want to change for the better. Now he's finally reached the point where he's ready to reconnect with humanity, and putting him in a relationship is a good opportunity to explore that process. Also, just more generally, it's a chance to do something new and different, and get out of doing the same old formula every week. There's a lot of potential in it. Whether that potential is fulfilled remains to be seen; a lot of last season fell short of fulfilling the potential of House's gradual awakening and had him occasionally revert to form out of what seemed to be nothing more than force of habit on the writers' part. But I'm certainly not going to assume it's a bad change before I've seen it play out.

I completely agree with you, Christopher...mostly. I just think hooking him up with Cuddy is a bad idea, something that could too easily sway into over-cliche'd melodrama. Which is the writer's haven't been too good at convincing me they're good at avoiding the last season.

House changing and falling in love? Good idea.

House changing and getting together with Cuddy? As far as I'm concerned, lame, easy, trite and shark jumping.

Well, who else? They've been hinting at the prospect for years, so it seems a logical outgrowth. Besides, Lisa Edelstein's a regular on the show -- they should use her.

And you can't know whether it's easy or trite until you see how they actually execute it. Any idea can be handled well or poorly.

Did they even bottom out on what was wrong with the crane driver that fell asleep at the wheel and caused the whole accident?

He had some sort of pinched nerve at the base of his spine that made him pass out whenever his blood pressure went up. Came from his job entailing sitting for many hours at a time without being able to get up.

House's romance with the Franka Potente character at the beginningof this season was infinitely more interesting than House with Cuddy. I feel they have no chemistry together.

He didn't fall asleep, actually. It was a physical problem and it just wasn't as interesting as all the other stuff going on.
It was nice to see Cuddy finally admit that she loved House although it really wasn't a big surprise. It was a surprise to me that she did admit it. She chose House instead of safe. And sex with a good looking younger man.

I've said for a long time that House died during the Tritter story arc; he ODed and collapsed in his apartment on Christmas Eve, then we saw him looking absolutely well turning himself in to try and get help. The latter didn't follow from the former, and I've thought ever since that we're actually witnessing House's delirium as he dies. In which case this is just a really long deathbed dream... :)

As Christopher says, it's all in the execution. The difference between House and Cuddy's mating dance in years past and the end of the sixth season is that, in years past, House was an addict who was out of his skull, while now House is clean and sober. In years past, House's games with Cuddy could be construed by Cuddy as House trying to get one over on her, while now she can't be so sure.

I would love love love to see Potente's character make a return. Hell, I'd even love to see House meet up again with Mira Sorvino's character from the Antarctica episode.

But Cuddy? I have no problem with House's behavior; it's Cuddy's behavior that I don't buy. It doesn't make sense to me. Of course, love and lust aren't rational.

I've been thinking the same thing. It's easy to imagine House being in love with Cuddy, or at least deluding himself into thinking so.

It deosn't make sense for Cuddy though. She's always been fond of House in a way but she's always chafed against the idea of a romance with him. Especially this season. And unless I'm just blind, there didn't seem to be a lot of subtext to her actions.

Basicially it's out of left field and I don't buy it. They could pull it out of the fire next year, but my money's on them blowing it.

I dunno... I've had the feeling all season that Cuddy had feelings for House but was resisting and retreating from them because intellectually she knew it would turn out badly to get involved with someone as damaged as House. But now that he's finally made a breakthrough, now that he's shown himself capable of a) admitting he was wrong about something, b) showing vulnerability to her and others, and c) reaching out and making an emotional connection with another human being, maybe she's finally ready to take a chance on him. At least that's how I read it.
