Hot water bottles

When i lived in the mountains, I kept the central heating set low (60F-65F) and used an electric blanket.

I have never used a hot water bottle. When I was younger and lived in Michigan, I had an electric blanket on my bed and extra blankets as well. We did have central heat in the house, but it would get super cold in my room, so all the extra help was nice :)

Living in Florida, it doesn't get super cold much. We do have central heat in the house but rarely use it. Only to get the chill out if we have had several days of below 50 at night, and only because the tile floors get really cold. :)

So how long does a hot water bottle last? I can't see the water staying hot enough to keep you warm through a full night's sleep/several hours.

During the winter we turn the heat down as we like the air to be on the chilly side when we sleep. We keep the heat at about 18 Celsius or about 65 Fahrenheit at night. An extra quilt does the trick in keeping the body warm. The thermostat is timed to warm the house about 30 minutes before the alarm goes off.

It's only meant to heat up your bed from freezing to acceptable to get into.

During the night you only need insulation (mattress and duvet) to stay warm.

It depends on several things. The size of the hot water bottle (adult ones are usually able to take two litres of water), how hot the water you put into them is, whether you use a cover on the hot water bottle or not and what the cover is made from. I think that most bottles stay warm for about 2 to 4 hours.

By the time a hot water bottle has gone cold the person's body heat is enough to keep the bed warm.

I find it a little strange that someone wouldn't know what a hot water bottle is. Sign of the times I guess.

Well now I feel like a dodo, because I've never heard of one or seen one before. I have used those rice bags that you can put in the microwave before, when I've had bad cramps, but I never thought to use it for warmth in the winter.

Every house/apartment I've lived in has had a regular heater (I guess what everyone here is calling central heating) that goes into every room, so that's all that is really needed. I also have winter pajamas that are flannel and long-sleeved.

I just had a thought though - those in the southern hemisphere must think it strange that we have the summer Olympics and winter Olympics in seasons that are opposite of what they're experiencing. Hmmm.

Probably not since they probably know the seasons are opposite in the other hemisphere. ;)

Huh. If the Summer/Winter Olympics city is in the SH do they run them in the SH Summer/Winter? I kind of guess they'd have to for climate reasons but I can't think of a time when that's happened. (Though I don't really follow the Olympics either.)

When the Summer Olympics were in Sydney, Australia in 2000, they were held between Sep 15 and 1 Oct which was early spring in Australia.

The 1956 Melbourne Summer Olympics were held from22 Nov to 8 Dec which was late spring/early summer (Australian convention has summer starting on Dec 1).

Edited to add - the 2016 Rio de Janiero games will be the third to be held in the Southern Henisphere and will be held between the 5-21 August which is late winter.

Interesting! For some reason I don't remember it being held so late in the year compared to other summer games, but it makes sense.

And yes, Trekker4747, obviously they are aware of the different seasons in different hemispheres (:p), but I meant more that it would be strange to watch people competing in skiing and and other such snowy sports when it is a hot summer in your neck of the woods. Or the opposite, watching outdoor volleyball when you are experiencing winter.
