(Hopefully improved) Star Wars II opening scene Corde-Padme dialogue

Andy Hong

Lieutenant
Red Shirt
Ok, ok, I know it's not Trek, but bear with me. Lots of people (e.g.: Cinemasins, HISHE (How it should have ended), were confused as to how it didn't make sense how Corde thought she had failed Padme. I've had this kicking around my head for a while. Also, good news, I'm writing it in prose, not screenplay format.

The massive explosion knocks Padme and Captain Typho off their feet. Padme gets up and runs to her fallen bodyguard. (she does not call out Corde's name). Corde is lying motionless on the floor. Padme takes off her helmet and kneels down, cradling Corde's body and head. Corde looks at (and oddly, slightly through) Padme, crying out in despair, "No! Oh, Goddess of Safety, no!!". A few moments pass before the loyal bodyguard can compose herself. She barks at Padme "Report!", before quietly, fearing the worst and the answer she will get, she asks "Is....is....?"

Padme quickly says to her fallen handmaiden "I'm here." Relief, almost joy crosses Corde's face. It has not all been for nothing! Padme is momentary confused, until she realises with horror that Corde can't actually see - she must have been blinded by the explosion!

Corde reaches out to touch her protectee's face, joyously saying "Lace, you're...."*. But, before she can make contact, her arm droops, her face falls and her head slumps to one side, and the light fades from her eyes. Feeling something in her hand, Padme takes her hand away from the back of Corde's head and for a few moments can only stare in renewed horror at the blood** on it. Recovering, tearfully, Padme closes her fallen handmaiden's eyes, as Captain Typho grabs her by the shoulders and moves her out of the area.

*or, "My Lady, you're...." (Lace was the Secret Service code name for Jackie Kennedy, who Natalie Portman recently portrayed - I'm assuming bodyguards might use code names for VIPs in this universe).
** or blood, bone and brain matter, depending on how gory we can be. The head injury is what has blinded/partially blinded her.
