Homesickness

I lived away from my homecity for grad school for more than 3 years, but I was only two hours of drive away, so I went home often. The longer I went going back was about a month, I think. I was still pretty homesick in the early days, especially since I didn't had my own place yet, and crashed on a schoolmate's couch for a week. Things got better when I had my place and I settled into the new routine.

I don't get homesick during holidays or travels, and actually I enjoy the feeling of being "on the road" (even tho I plan my travels accurately and I am definitively not "on the road" in any meaningful sense ). I'm still happy when I get home, tho.

I get homesick, I can tell you that having my own Skype account and actual phone number that friends and family can call helps a LOT. Otherwise, I just try to stay busy with hobbies, to travel and make friends. Obviously rural Japan is a very different situation, but I would say personal hobbies is a HUGE thing for me-- if I didn't have music, guitar, photography, creative writing, Facebook and Skype-- I'd go crazy.
