Holy crap, Late night with Conan O'brien just got censored in LA.

Capt. Vulcan

Vice Admiral
Admiral
Maybe not a big deal, but they just pre-empted a section of conan in the Los Angeles market. The reasoning being that he was about to do a bit about how much of a train wreck the election is so far, and they felt it was insensitive because there was just a train crash last week in LA.

Granted, the wreck was terrible. I think 25 people died in the crash when a metro-link train crashed head on with a freight train. But really? When the crash happened the live news chopper footage didn't flinch at the image of a dead footless body being hoisted out of the wreckage. They documented the whole thing in detail. But now they're running the news over 5 minutes of Conan because there's a "train wreck" joke? Seems like overkill to me, and kind of surprising considering it's Los Angeles.

Given some of the non-politically correct jokes that make it into shows over here in the UK, that does seem like overkill.

KNBC-LA has never been overtly conservative, so I am willing to give them the benefit of the doubt

On the surface it seems like overkill....but maybe the script contained some footage of a real train wreck, meant as a joke but not really sensitive to folks who had just been thru one.

Who knows?

I must admit being surprised...but we don't know their side of the story and what the Conan footage actually contained. It would be one thing if all Conan did was verbally refer to the election as 'a train wreck'. But it would be quite another to actually show train wreck footage or something as part of a skit.

And if all he did was refer to the election as 'a train wreck' then all they had to do was bleep that word out - not pre-empt 5 entire minutes of the show. So I'm thinking it is more than just the verbal train wreck reference....

Silly move, IMHO. It's such a common turn of phrase. I work in radio and when two pieces of audio are accidentally broadcast at the same time, we call that a trainwreck. I agree with PKTrekGirl, above... if you're worried about it just bleep the word. Heck, calling the election a BLEEP might have even made the joke funnier.

It was probably to spare LA viewers from the "douchebag supercollider" which involved two model trains with pictures of a "douchebag" (I don't remember who) on the front that collided with each other derailing in an eruption of flame.

lol - I would definitely have edited that one out if I was in charge! Wow, that's horrifically inappropriate! :guffaw:

Unfortunately, as funny as that would be, it doesn't seem to match the descriptions I read. It sounded like the bit they cut was something to do with the election.

I just watched last night's "censored" skit, and oh man... definitely not appropriate. Especially with the two toy trains colliding and exploding into flames like that. I never thought I'd say this, but KNBC did the right thing here.
