Holo Pregnancy

Since B'Elanna had never been pregnant before, she wouldn't know what a kicking baby actually felt like. It's possible that the holodeck was just "kicking" the outside of her real stomach, and she interpreted it as a baby kick.

On the other hand,

It's not like the players nervous system is hooked into the hologrid, is it?

It could easily be. I mean, it would be almost trivially easy to simulate nervous sensations by using electromagnetic fields to induce teeny weeny currents inside the brain. Today, we do a lot of that without the need to insert electrode needles, by using copper wire coils pressed against the head. On the holodeck, it wcould probably be achieved without physical coils next to the person, just like the forcefields are created without proximity coils.

It probably would be a bit more advanced than standard holodeck stuff, and not something the 'deck could easily pull off with a new user whose brain the 'deck hasn't mapped yet. But simulating the kicks of a baby would be among the easiest things to do, as the sensation of sudden localized pain could be achieved by a rather coarse stimulation pulse, as opposed to the sensation of delicious ice cream or a warm bubble bath.

Perhaps direct stimulation of the brain is the next step in holo-entertainment, but not yet in use on the Federation systems of the 2370s...

Heh, if it could stimulate the brain in such a specific manner, I would think holo-addiction would be a lot more common than just what we saw with Mr. Barclay. Similar to Garak's anti-torture implant, you could simply tell the 'deck to make you feel "good." It could then stimulate your brain's pleasure centers for as long as you like.

It's not due to be introduced until the next class of starship.

In "The Killing Game", Torres is given a holographic pregnancy. B'Elanna even notes that it weighs on her body, and can even feel it kick. I'm at a loss to figure out how that is possible. Was the holodeck actually projecting a fetus inside her body?

The way I thought it worked was was that it projected a fake stomach in between her real stomach and her clothes. Since it came into contact with her it moved and she could still feel it.

But of coure it was because Roxann Dawson was pregnant in real life at the time

I supposet the holodeck could project clothes on top of your real clothes, especially skin tight starfleet uniforms; but how about if you were wearing large baggy clothes? In FirstContact Lily went from wearing a jumper/jacket combo to a sleeveless v neck dress, does the holodeck transport off your clothes into a buffer of some kind?

I remember Chakotay once related a story about how his clothes got caught in the transporter, leaving only his comm badge. I think it's also been established that the transporter can disable or even remove weapons from a person, so why not clothes?

Like I said, no problem with making it appear someone's pregnant. The weirdness comes in with the sensations. Not a woman here, so no idea what it actually feels like, but I'd think it feel different than something tapping on the tummy. Some have said that Torres hadn't been pregnant before, so she wouldn't know what it felt like either. How would the holodeck know that? It's probably just has a preprogrammed set of templates for pregnancies.

The holodeck might even do that routinely, to simulate the experience of having a full stomach after eating holo-food. You'd be hungry again immediately after turning off the program, as opposed to the option where the holodeck replicates you some real food. Some might prefer the former settings.
Isn't holodeck food (and various other "static" props) just replicated (MAlpha certainly says so)? The holodecks were certainly explained to replicate solid objects for some stuff...

No doubt the holodeck can do it several ways. There would be real, replicated food when consumption of food is the point of the simulation. But there could also be "holographic wine" as in VOY "The Cloud", an illusion of drinking a substance without the consequence of having one's stomach filled with the substance or one's bloodstream saturated with the chemicals of the substance.

Yeah that "Relax, it's holographic wine" was I think THE point where I decided that I was giving up on trying to like Voyager for good.

There were already so many plot points that were just violated logic and common sense...but that was the final straw, I think...

Or quite humorous. I don't see why you couldn't make anyone pregnant, even a man.

if the holodeck really could make a man pregnant, then it must be able to create the illusion that he has bits that he doesn't actually have.

Holographic sex change, anyone? complete with a vagina that feels real and everything! And ladies, you can see what's it's like to have a penis!

I've wondered whether it could change the appearance of players, such as change your clothes or make you look younger or larger or smaller;
Suppose person A is in holodeck 1 and person B is in holodeck 2. The holodecks are linked so A interacts with a tiny projection of B, and B interacts with a gigantic projection of A. Play Attack of the 50-Foot Woman, etc. Engage in kinky sex.
