HIS MAJESTY’S SHIP SURPRISE

HMS Surprise was a fully-rigged Royal Navy frigate that served during the Napoleonic Wars. She was 135 feet long, with a beam of 32 feet and a draft of 13 feet. She had a complement of 160 officers and men - including Royal Marines - and her main armament consisted of 20 9-pound cannon.

MASTER AND COMMANDER: THE FAR SIDE OF THE WORLD

Master and Commander is the sailing ship era war drama directed by Peter Weir and starring Russell Crowe and Paul Bettany. Based on the series of books by Patrick O’Brian, it chronicles the experiences of Captain Jack Aubrey (Crowe) and his friend and the ship’s doctor Stephen Maturin (Bettany) as the Surprise pursues a French privateer across the seas. Surprise was portrayed in the film by the replica of a real sailing-era frigate, HMS Rose.

Master and Commander. In my opinion a better Star Trek film than several actual Star Trek films!

An excellent ship, if somewhat small for the time. The 28-gun sixth rate frigates were on the way out post-1800. Their place in the Navy's Order of Battle was taken by the 32-gun fifth rates armed with 12 pounders.

Still, a beautiful vessel, particularly when under full sail in a fresh breeze.

And HMS Surprise was the inspiration for the "Hero Ship" in the following TV pilot from 1996..
