Dan's gonna help us get the DVD quality files on youtube for season 1-6 with his cleanup filters. Had briefly toyed with re-rendering CGI with the help of some of our previous team, but since we can't fix the keys, this is a good compromise and will allow us to focus time and energy on other things

Hmm looks like season 7 and onward is only at 360p so we might have to replace those too when we get to them with the full res. The idea is to put it out in the best quality possible so when people stumble on it 50 years from now it'll look at least decent hopefully.

I'm looking forward to working on this project; a dream come true to not only see Hidden Frontier in the best quality, but to actually make it happen!

Well The Original Series, Next Generation and movies have been reborn on blu ray so how fitting that one of our finest fan series is getting remastered - OK maybe not full HD but still as high quality as possible!

Hell Yes.

I don't know why they dont switch to an animation format show to keep it going, the shows stopped due to lack of funds, but an all animation show would be nearly free except for the actors fees.

My understand is that animation is pretty expensive.
I'd be happy for HF to continue on as audio dramas, which they had started to do before they abruptly shut down.

I'm doing a massive Trek rewatch/re-read marathon, and I was already planning to watch HF after all the official shows/movies, so this is great news.

Even if it's a one off a Hidden Frontier reunion would be amazing, I think there are a couple of audio shows like Henglaar MD continuing the story.

Of course the Excelsior crew got their movie comeback in 'Operation Beta Shield'.

I think Intrepid mentioned a desire to bring a certain HF character back but it would mean them vacationing to Scotland! Because of the major crossover events Intrepid I see that show as much a part of that series/universe as the shows made in California (Odyssey/The Helena Chronicles/Federation One).

I did - they are talking about DVD quality. Which this clearly isn´t. Neither in resolution nor in quality.

Nothing wrong about that, if the material is not available in any better format. But calling it DVD quality is setting expectations way too high.

I have to agree. This doesn't look like dvd quality to me either.

Sorry, perhaps my wording was wrong. Last month I was merely a fan, now I'm working on regrading the second series for official release for the team.

Rob has kindly provided me with the DVD, - that being the footage in it's best quality (both CGI and live action footage). It would indeed be incorrect to suggest that they are in DVD quality however they are in the best quality possible.

I'm hopeful that as the series continues, you'll see better leaps in quality between the originally released editions and the remastered's.

Again, let me apologise for any misunderstandings caused by my lack of clarity.

I'm not sure what final resolution HF worked with in the earlier season, they were shooting in SD and keying live by the latter series. As I recall, the camera wasn't capable of widescreen, so Rob was cropping the footage for 16:9 presentation (which would drop the resolution somewhat). Again, that was my experience on the shoots I attended, so may not be entirely accurate.

Keep in mind, HD wasn't even available (or at least not financially viable) to most people outside commercial production companies. So it really is a limitation of the equipment available to Rob and co at the time.

I would also imagine, that the price of storage media might have been a consideration. Video takes up a lot of space, and hard drives ten years ago were, much, much more expensive. So storing all that footage could have been problematic.

But that's just my 0.02c, so shouldn't be taken as gospel.

"Remaster" means to go back to the source elements and make a new master copy. If these are from the original tapes and rendered out more clearly, they're remasters. If not, they're not.
