Here's a puzzle for you math-minded folks

Quanta magazine published a probability puzzle in honor of Nichelle Nicholls featuring Uhura. I can't begin to understand what they're saying, but I thought I'd share it here in case anyone wants to take a crack at it.

I don't know why, but I clicked the link and was thoroughly, and unsurprisingly bamboozled (I'd just randomly flail at buttons and hope for the best!). I'm sure there must be others here who have a much better grip on this kind of thing than me

At very first sight it looks related to the puzzle and strategy discussed in this youtube video (I would suggest not watching it if you wish to try the puzzle yourself). I haven't really looked at the puzzles in detail, though, so I might be mistaken.
