help needed to find name of a 90's series

None of those fits Farscape.

The first series to pop up in my mind for some reason was "Starhunter" but that was in the earty 2000's. Of course there is no number in the title but i think it did only run for 26 episodes.

Oh wait it is called Starhunter 2300! Is that the series you are looking for?

"Think" is the operative word here.

A casual viewer having not seen the show for a decade could easily misremember the main character as the captain.

Crichton, Aeryn, Crais, Stark, and assorted Peacekeepers all look human.

"medium sized budget"

A reasonable assumption. It looks more expensive than most 90's syndicated sci-fi and less expensive than DS9 or Voyager.

Starhunter 2300 is very very close!

although the series is based on a prison/container ship

looks very close although the series i remember was a little darker/serious
