Help me understand the current situation on LOST

Okay, this is gonna be real spoilery.

At the end of last season, a certain person hit a certain object with a rock. Everything went white. We all know what that implied.

We now see, apparently, the results of that event. The plane never went off course, never broke up, and the past five years never happened.

Everyone's at home where they want to be (well...maybe not all, but I digress), and there's a whole 'nother timeline happenin'.

Except it seems the original timeline is still happening too. What I don't get is that certain person with the rock being found and it all being a very unhappy scene, but then that's just it. They got found. By the people they'd been with. The people who are still on the island. You know, the island where we saw everything go white?

If the "going white" thing DID happen because of the rock, why in the world are they even still there? Why aren't they something just this side of tapioca pudding, or possibly fireplace ashes? If the "big white thing" means what it seems to have meant (and the fact we're also seeing the "never crashed" timeline suggests the big white DID happen), why are all those people still even there, stuck in the past?

Can someone explain this to me?

Did the "big white" mean what we thought it did, or didn't it?

*cough* There's a forum for that

But to answer your question...

... the best interpretation so far seems to be that the white flash was NOT the timeline resetting itself or the bomb going off, but was actually the white flash we got when characters jump through time. I believe a character mentioned it in the season premier.

Yea, if you'll remember, when she hit it with the rock, they were still in the 70's. Post rock, they got time jumped to the "present".

Okay, here's my take. Caveat: Anyone who still expects spoiler tags in this thread has only themselves to blame. The title makes it pretty obvious that spoilers will be involved.

Juliet hitting the rock did two things:

1. Propel the original characters to the future (eg present).

2. Create a new timeline/reality in which the characters we know and love will follow completely different paths and will probably end up happier while the original characters die horribly in the upcoming armageddon of a series finale. (That last part is just a guess, but I still feel cheated that the BSG finale wasn't a bloodbath so Lost has to make up for it. :D)

I don't think the two realities will ever intersect literally in the story. The connection will be thematic.
