Help me identify this coin!

What's his face

Sorry the photos are a little blurry. You can make out all the details though.

I think it's Byzantine, with the Greek writing and the roman-style artwork. That or its Roman. I don't know, honestly.
Who is this emperor? What does the writing say?
Let's see if the collective mind of the TBBS can't solve this one.
Thanks in advance.

AD 175 - Commodus was emperor of Rome at the time.

This could be it, but I can't find an image that looks the same when I google it up.

I'll keep on looking.

I couldn't find anything. Any chance of getting a better picture?

Actually, what would be best is if you could make a pencil rubbing of both sides of the coin and then scan the rubbings.

I'm guessing it was a coin minted in the eastern part of the Roman Empire. It's before the split, iirc, so it would just be a Roman coin (but those are definitely Greek letters).

I could ask my professors if they have any idea. It probably is Commodus, although the coin doesn't look quite as dumb as a post as the real one (plus he's clean shaven).

Yeah, thats where i recognize it from. Quite cool if you ask me.

I posted on an ancient coin forum and I got this:

Interesting. No idea how much it's worth though.

I recognise the URL - it's the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford. Try emailing the Coin Room; you'll probably just get a "form" reply saying that they can't give remote valuations but you never know.... the public galleries are currently shut for renovation so I'm guessing some of the staff will have less to do than usual and they might be nice if you're nice and be able to give you a rough valuation. Show some interest in the history of it & they might reciprocate.

The Ashmolean has had the online coin directory for a little while now. Don't you read Oxford Today? ;)

I'd like to see in-focus pictures of the coins. It appears incredibly clean and shiny for its age, suggesting that it has either been chemically cleaned (bad) or that it is a reproduction (worse).

I just turn to the letters page to read the complaints from crusty old alumni about the magazine's dumbing down. Always amusing.

Quite. Always a nice dash of prejudice as well. ;) Kidding aside, I find that the articles generally waver between being too superficial and overly self-congratulatory.
