I must admit I'm one of those people who has been adamantly against a female Doctor. BUT...Helen Mirren! Yes, I could be persuaded...

I am dead set against a female Doctor but wouldn't mind seeing her as a Timelord.

cant they do it as a Christmas special between the 11th and 12th Doctors,have Matt regenerate into Helen say something like "something has gone very wrong, this doesn't normally happen" then at the end, have Helen regenerate into the new Doctor saying something like "this regeneration was just too unstable to last" have a few CGI shots of regeneration energy coming off theHelenDoctor at various points in the episodes.

I'm sure she'd do a fine job. Problem is it'd be Eccelston all over again. She'd do it for a laugh, then get bored after a single series and decide to get on with her career.

Its the same problem I'd have with casting any big-name actor.

What if Superman, James Bond or Captain Kirk were women? Some characters you just don't do as women.

You want to make Starbuck a woman? Great! But you don't make Zeus a woman...it would just be a completely different character. I know the doctor is all about different, but nah.

because it's confusing enough for young kids that the Doctor changes from one man to another, without making him change into a woman.

Because the character has been male since the beginning. Regeneration or not, the Doctor is a man. Changing that would just be weird.

Now, if you wanted to make him a woman for a single episode or something, that could be fun.
