I hope this isn't too spammish, but I've just been to the dentist to have a filling on my lower left wisdom tooth. Evidently I wasn't ready for "wisdom" because it's already rotting away. This is odd, because while my diet is far from the best, my dental health is generally good; according to the dentist, my brushing is also very good. Nonetheless, this tooth needed work, and to be honest it's been trouble from the start, coming through painfully and pressing strangely on the nerve endings when I chew too hard.

Anyway, while the filling was routine (15 minutes is all), I'll probably have trouble in future. The dentist thinks it's inevitable that sooner or later the tooth will have to come out. I'm booked in for visits every three-months rather than six months, so he can keep an eye on it. If it starts hurting, I'm to let him know and he'll refer me to the hospital to have it taken out, no doubt as painfully as possible.

Anyone else have problem teeth that don't seem to behave when the rest do?

A rather pointless post, I know, but it's our gods-given right to moan about personal problems in Misc; I'm sure it's in the UN declaration somewhere. :p

Well, I only have wisdom teeth on the top, and they are total shit. I'm going to have to get them removed at some point, it's just not urgent right now. For what it's worth, wisdom teeth are notoriously difficult to keep clean, even if they aren't causing other problems (like coming into an already-crowded mouth.)

For removal, they either numb your mouth or knock you out with gas, and use a small saw to cut the teeth into pieces. Wisdom tooth roots often go all the way down to the bone so they aren't as simple to remove as other teeth. That's part of why I'm dreading getting mine pulled.

But they'll usually write you a prescription for some pretty good drugs so you won't be in much pain afterward. I've never had vicodin but I guess I'll get to try it whenever I get around to this!

DN, about the title of this thread: what am I missing???

I had one wisdom tooth pulled years ago. Wasn't too bad. They didn't cut it up the way RM described.

I had all 4 impacted wisdom teeth removed when I was 19. I was knocked out the entire time and on codeine for the rest of the week. It didn't entirely dull the pain, but the pink clouds and fluffy bunnies that kept floating in front of my eyes meant I didn't really care. It may not be a pleasant experience getting wisdom teeth removed, but recovery is usually swift. And codeine is oodles of fun. ;)

The Sadist Dentist's Song from Little Shop of Horrors. ;) This one:

When I was younger,
Just a bad little kid,
My momma noticed funny things I did-
Like shootin' puppies with a BB-Gun.
I'd poison guppies, and when I was done,
I'd find a pussy cat and bash in it's head.
Thats when my momma said...
She said my boy I think someday
You'll find a way
To make your natural tendencies pay!
You'll be a Dentist!

You have a talent for causing things pain
Son, be a dentist!
People will pay you to be inhumane
Your temperamant's wrong for the priesthood
And teaching would suit you still less!
Son, be a dentist!
You'll be a success!

I can tell you from experience of both having all 4 impacted wisdom teeth pulled (with many stitches) & from having a ligament replacement that they won't, unfortunately.

The NHS will prescribe something like Co-codamol, which is paracetemol & codeine combined and impossible to get high on because you'll get paracetemol toxicity before you can take enough to get high.

They offered me morphine for my ACL replacement at hospital, which I declined so I wouldn't have to stay an extra night, but once you are out, forget it.

I just had a wisdom tooth pulled last week! It had a cavity, and my dentist asked me what I wanted to do. She said a root canal might be necessary, and difficult.

So I told her to just pull it. It was over in a few minutes (2 shots of novacaine and a pair of pliers). It hurt for a day or two, and that was that.

Oh, and I got no good drugs. 3 days worth of Motrin. My dentist doesn't tolerate wimps...

I had 4 impacted wizzies but I was too much of a wuss to have them removed, although I was sent to hospital to have the op (none of yer dentist's chair rubbish). That was precipitated by an infection behind one of them which laid me up for a week but aside from that I've been fine. Over time they mostly emerged although parts of them are still embedded.

Must admit I only clicked on the thread to find out what the title pop culture reference was. :o

My wisdom teeth all seem to be generally OK, but the bottom two only ever erupted to about 3/4 of the other teeth's height and their orientation is slightly skewed in comparison to them. I guess that means I still have a kooky perspective on life... :D

Anyway, I did have to have 4 pre-molars taken out prior to getting braces as a kid. Teeth were so crammed together that it was the only way to create enough space to get everything neatly lined up. I had them done under a general anaesthetic so they could all be pulled at the same time. Funnily enough I don't remember having much pain after the op, though it took some time for the wounds to full heal up and then a bit longer for the other teeth to move in to fill the gaps.

Also this. Curses!

That's too bad. My op was in the dentist's chair in Toronto in '89. I'm a complete wimp when it comes to pain so I was glad for the codeine as I had plenty of dissolvable stitches. I'm light-headed when it comes to any kind of drug, so it's small wonder that I wasn't fit to work a manual tin opener for a week.

I had the same thing done for the same reason. I remember coming to in the dentists office and being totally loopy.

:rommie: Thanks, DN.

I saw the thread title, and for some reason thought this was going to be about RoJoHen.

:bolian:

Good luck DN!

Had all 4 of mine removed on the cheap 20+ years ago - no insurance - thery were infected. I got a suggestion that Tylenol would help for the pain. But it didn't hurt anything near as badly after the teeth pulling than it did before the teeth pulling. I don't remember taking much tylenol afterwards. The shape of my jawline slimmed down after that and a couple people didn't recognize me afterwards -the lady at the dmv stared at my old pic a long long time before she'd renew my license.
