HBO Max's Heaven's Gate: Cult of Cults

4-part 1hour documentary series on the notorious mass suicide cult, Heaven's Gate, that mixed spirituality with belief in E.T.s. This documentary series is very well made. I'm only into the first episode and I'm learning so much. It contains rare video footage, audio recordings and photographs of the cult's history and interviews with surviving members and family members of the cult victims. Here's an interesting fact I didn't know. Nichelle Nichols (Lt. Uhura)'s brother, Thomas Nichols was one of the 39 members that died in the mass suicide that ended the cult in the 90s.

I had heard that long ago.

People tried to lay this at the feet of Art Bell, but he and Whitley took a call from an astronomer from Hawaii who showed the original UFO-free photo of Hale-Bopp—this before the tragedy took place.

The Bad Astronomer Plait never knew this, but I did, being a late night radio listener for some time.

It was the comet itself that was seen as a signal to go on the “away team”

I remember this story vividly, mostly because of the group’s website, the WWW still being a relatively new thing in 1997.

Art Bell took some unwarranted blame for the suicides, in my opinion. Art would give airtime to a lot of weird theories and bizarre stuff, but I think most of us realized that it was just entertainment, including Art himself.
