Having trouble hooking up my 360 to my tv, need help.

For the past few months my 360 was being lent to my roommate because his wouldn't play discs. I finally got it back now and I'm having trouble setting it up.

The tv he had it hooked up to was a standard resolution tv, so he had the console set to the lowest display settings. Well, I have an HDTV I'm trying to hook it up with an HDMI cable. Well that won't work because the systems settings. But every time I try to go in there and change the display settings it won't let me. This is really frustrating me and I'm sure it's something simple that I'm overlooking. I just really need some help :(

You mean you can't access the System Settings section under My Xbox? What's it saying when you try to access it?

I can access it, but everytime I try to change it to 720P (which my tv supports) the screen goes black and then since there is no picture it reverts back to the SD display.

Okay, are you using a standard HDMI cable, or is it one of those component HD cables? If it's the latter, make sure you have the connector switched to HDTV.

Instead of trying to select 720p, try choosing Optimal Resolution at the top of the list.

If that doesn't work, you can reset your Xbox's display settings. To do that, make sure you don't have a disc in the tray, then turn on your Xbox using your controller. While the console's booting up, hold down the Y button and the right trigger at the same time, and keep holding them when you see the Xbox 360 logo come up. The console should then restart, and the display settings will be restored to their defaults. After that's done, then try changing your display settings again.

The console is just not letting me change it's settings.

The only way I am able to see a picture at all is if I have the HDMI/AV cables plugged in with the switch set to TV mode. If I try to change it to HD mode, I get no picture. And if I try to use a standard HDMI cable I get nothing.

Edited: Well crap, I randomly tossed the HDMI cable back on there and it works now. I have no idea what I did differently.
