Have you seen a falling meteorite?

I saw one about 30 years ago. It was glowing red (it was night) and fell into a plowed field and it bounced once. Then I saw one very close up last year. It was sort of glowing a blue-green color (in the afternoon) and flew across the road in front of us (we were driving in town!) and it crossed the road about 10 feet in front of us and disappeared.
Anyone else have a similar "extraterrestrial" experience?

Lots of meteor showers like the Perseids, Leonids, and Orionids and some individual ones out in the desert or in the mountains, but nothing up close like that where I could see it land.

Missed seeing one the other night over Southern Vancouver Island, but I was fast a sleep at that time of the morning.

Too bad you didn't go after them. They're worth big money.

Twice I've seen large(ish) meteorites: once, years ago in Austin, after coming home from the movies, and once in broad daylight, in Katy, TX. The one in Katy was quite a fireball, but appeared to burn up before hitting the ground. The one in Austin was smaller; it was around midnight and it went sailing overhead in the night sky.

I've seen several "falling stars" in my day, but those two described above were close enough to actually see the flames instead just a streak of light against the sky.

I've seen hundred of meteors, but none that survived the trip through the atmosphere that I know of. If I ever do find a meteorite, it's going up on eBay because I like money.

(Note for mods: Everyone probably knows this by now, but XKCD allows hotlinking, which is good because i don't feel like fucking with Photobucket right now.)

I saw one while driving on the highway some months ago, but of course couldn't pay much attention to it.

I've seen a couple of break-ups during descent that looked rather like fireworks, many streaks at random times or during showers, and once a shower far away from city lights that was so magical that the shooting stars seemed to fall like rain. Never seen the actual item up close, outside a museum or school.

Bad things happen though, if you believe the movies. War of the Worlds (the 50s version), Creepshow, The Blob, or worse Heavy Metal. Ick. ;)

I can't recall when and where I saw it because I was a kid but I saw one, made a wish too. It didn't come true.

The first one fell in a plowed field about 11pm while we were driving home on the highway. No way to find it then. And the second one just burned up or disappeared. I would love to have one, though. I'd keep it next to my fossils.

That happened to us once. We tracked it down and found a baby inside, wrapped in red and blue blankets. We named him Clark after Martha's family.:mallory:

I saw a beauty in November last year which burned for about 6 or 7 seconds in the sky. Was fairly large but ended up landing out to see.

I own a chunk of a meteorite which landed in Africa in 1971.
