Has SNW made future Kelvin movies obsolete?

Okay so now we have Strange New Worlds, which is pretty much a rebooted weekly 5 year mission show with very similar new looks and similar relatable, modern versions of classic characters... what can a Kelvin movie do to stand out? All the talk surrounding Star Trek 4 has been about a smaller budget, but unless they're doing bonkers huge budget things like flattening San Francisco or shredding and crashing the Enterprise, what can make a new Kelvin movie different to a two-part SNW episode with different actors?

"Mommy let's go see Star Trek"

"We have Star Trek at home!"

And I say this as a massive fan of the Kelvin movies who hoped Beyond would be a big enough success that they could make 5-year-mission movies every couple of years forever and ever.

The Kelvin movies have at least five things that Strange New Worlds doesn't:
    • The budget and time for stunts and big action scenes.
    • The potential for anything to happen, without worrying about the timeline.
    • Kirk, Spock, McCoy, Sulu etc. interacting.
    • A madman bent on revenge.
    • The Enterprise getting blown up.
I think the budget and the cast are enough really. Strange New Worlds can't give people Chris Pine and Karl Urban. And First Contact did alright when Voyager was airing.

The general public is far more familiar with Pine Trek than Pike Trek. SNW is just a few episodes in, and people are already making grand pronouncements about it. I love it, too, but I don't think we can say Kelvin has no future just because of a few episodes of SNW that have aired so far. This is a highly premature assessment of things.

That's a good point. The general public probably don't care which captain or crew is doing what. With all the different shows on now they're probably going to get the same kind of interest Trek had from Generations to Nemesis when they had two other shows on most of the time.
My interest in the Kelvin films is pretty much just with the characters and I would be totally happy if it was two hour of them just sitting around debating ethical issues or whatever, but I get that's not very cinematic.

SON: (looks at SNW's Anson Mount). Isn't he the new Captain Kirk?
FATHER: No, kiddo. He's Captain Pike.
    SON: Who?
FATHER: (sighs) Go back to playing your video games...

Develop different uniforms, and expand on what JJ Abrams has established in the 1st 2 movies.

I think they both do different things, for largely different audiences in different mediums with different characters.

I'm not really sure why we would even need another Kelvin timeline film. And like @F. King Daniel, I'm also a fan of them.

I agree. I think the idea that Strange New Worlds somehow limits this pretty much says to the audience who likes "Kelvin Trek" "sucks to be you! Go be happy with SNW!" Now, I don't think that's the intent, but that's how it comes across.

Kelvin Trek offers a much different perspective and opportunities for storytelling. I would welcome it's addition. Is it a need? No, but then I don't need Star Trek right now. But, it's nice to have.

The original intent of the Kelvin timeline was to give writers the opportunity to be able to tell new stories with the TOS cast without affecting the continuity of the prime timeline. But DSC and SNW (and CBS in general) have taken such liberties that adherence to TOS and other previous canon is no longer a factor. They might as well be yet another timeline analogous to the KT. So there's really no story that the KT can tell that they can't basically tell in SNW (other than Vulcan being destroyed, that is.)

    And?

I don't see why Kelvin Trek can't exist along side.

This strikes me as a very strange argument.

    Fair enough:
And that these are entirely different characters from their TOS counterparts and people have an investment in those characters. It's not the stories but the characters that I want to see continue.

    SNW doesn't do that.

That would depend on your point of view. So far the TOS characters I've seen in DSC and SNW don't seem remotely like what I saw in TOS. That's not necessarily a bad thing, but I find little difference between updating old characters for the KT, and updating them for SNW.

Mileage will vary. Pike is very much different. Uhura is too, though Spock isn't quite so different.

I'd love to see a new Kelvin movie, but I agree that DSC and SNW has filled that ecological niche. Plus, the Kelvin cast would be firmly in the TMP-era now. I'm afraid it's too late.
What I'd love is for Eaglemoss and STO to bring out the Enterprise-A and for a TrekLit-like novel continuation of the Kelvin movies and comics.

Edit: UNLESS we get the Kelvin movie we really need - Captain Kirk & crew facing off against EVIL!Kirk and the ISS Enterprise of the Terran Empire! Epic space battles. Father-son drama between Pine!Kirk and Hemsworth!Kirk. Uhura cat-fight. Spock vs. beard. Sulu fencing Sulu.

Too late for what? Move forward in time, have Kirk a seasoned commander, stepping up and taking more bold steps, while having to manage a crisis. I just don't see the conflict that apparently is apparent to all except me.

Or maybe because neither DSC nor SNW are scratching the Kelvin preference I have.

Why does being in the Motion Picture era mean its too late for more Kelvin motion pictures?

Because the "classic" 5 year mission is over. They'd either have to pretend the cast is younger - and keep in mind that SNW-Uhura Goods is old enough to be an actor but young enough to remember being a child and seeing KEL-Uhura Saldana on screen - or say the "original" 5YM is done and they're on their second or third. It would lose the "alternate run of TOS events" appeal, unless they went with "new timeline, new history".
