Has Anyone Taken A Cat On A Plane?

I know, random question. But I'll probably have to take my cat across the country later this year and I can't really see any great way of doing it. I can't drive, and Amtrak doesn't allow pets so it looks like I'm going to have to take him on the plane.

I'm just nervous because I've heard horror stories about taking cats on planes, and it looks like any sort of sedative is a really bad idea. I want to take him in the cabin (not cargo) but in the car he always complains so much, I'm worried about him being a nuisance. I've been doing research online but I was wondering if anyone here has personal experience that could help.

Thanks!

Yeah my friends moved from here in California to Texas and the airline they were on (I don't remember which one) did allow the cats in the cabin, but of course, the cats were sedated before the flight.

Southwest, American, United, Continental, Delta, JetBlue, and others allow cats to travel in the cabin if they have health documentation and can fit in an underseat carrier. The fees are usually somewhere between $75-$150 and may count as a carry-on item.

The underseat dimensions vary but are generally in the following range:

The under-seat dimensions are as follows:

* Window Seat: 19"L x 14"W x 8.25"H
* Middle Seat: 19"L x 19"W x 8.25"H
* Aisle Seat: 19"L x 14"W x 8.25"H

This place will give you a pet travel package tailored to the requirements of each specific airline they have listed, but it's probably really expensive:

These two sites have pet travel policies for numerous airlines:

Here's the requirements for some major US carriers that allow cats in the cabin:

Well I just heard about this new airline called Pet Airways. They are a pet only airline, and they call the animals their "pawsengers." :lol: It looks like it would cost something around $400 to fly your pet across the country. They only service the major cities I believe.

What about fellow travellers with cat allergies?

I would be most displeased to be stuck next to a cat on a cross country flight.

Thanks so much for all the info, Locutus! I've been checking carrier dimensions and seat dimensions. I didn't know United allowed pets so that helps. I've been doing all this research too but you're so much better at finding it and presenting it!

By the way, if this move goes through we'll be living in the same state! Don't worry, I'll be far enough away. :p

I'm almost certain you can't take animals into the cabin with you.
I've been on flights where people had animals in the cabin. The carriers they used were similar to the ones pictured here.

Yeah, I'd get a soft-sided one so that it can conform to the dimensions a bit. I've never actually seen people bring pets in the cabin but I know that it's done.

"Cats on a Plane"? I'd watch it.

I was *this* close to making that the title of my thread.

I looked into that too, but the nearest city would be LA and that's probably a good six hours from where we'll be.

As would I.

That's something I've considered as well, which is why I'd much rather have gotten a cabin on a train even if it was much more expensive. While I'm sympathetic to those who suffer from allergies, I absolutely will not put him in cargo if it comes down to that. I wouldn't have him out and about during the flight and people carry a lot of animal dander on their own clothing, honestly.

No I've been reading, some airlines allow it and some do not.
This would help me choose which airlines NOT to fly.

And that's a good idea. If it's something you feel strongly about, their are obviously other airlines to choose from.

I'm sorry if I'm not coming across as more sympathetic but I really just want to find a way to move my cat safely across the country. It's not like I'm taking him on some vacation because I can't bear to leave him behind. This is a one-time thing and I'm generally stressed about the idea of relocating, given that I've lived in IL my entire life. I'm just trying to find the quickest, safest way of doing it all.

Yeah, it's unfortunate that they only go to the major cities, but I guess they are a fairly new service so it will take a while to expand.

And I live about 6 hours from LA! Will you be coming to California?

My husband's taking a job in San Jose, CA. If all goes well I'll follow him out there in the fall. :)

I've seen this before. I was mildly disappointed that they didn't take it out and let it roam the aisles.

In the U.S. some airlines allow pets in as long as they are in a airline approved carrier and it fits under the seat in front of you. It has to stay in the carrier the entire trip, including layovers.
