Has Anyone Read Towers of Midnigt yet? WOT 13?

I just got it from the library and started reading the prologue. I really enjoyed "The Gathering Storm" and thought that Brandon Sanderson did a terrific job of restoring life to this prolonged fantasy. The last few books had been redundant and lacking of any real plot progress, while the last book tons occurred moving us quicker and quicker to the Last Battle.

Reading it right now: shaping up to be as good as the last postumus novel in the series. Lots of stuff happening, and real cool scenes taking place that have been coming for a LOOOOOONG time.

As much as I hate to speak ill of the dead, Brandon Sanderson is really bringing a fresh air to the series, something Robert Jordan's last half dozen Wheel of Times failed to do. But that's just my opinion.

I think you'd be hard pressed to find someone who didn't feel the same way about Jordan's last few books. It's a valid criticism. Sanderson has really given the twilight of the series a last bit of sunshine.

I have the book on my shelf just waiting to be read. And I'm really looking forward to it.

Yeah, I finished Towers of Midnight last week.

Long time fan of the series and eagerly awaiting the last book. Towers of Midnight did exactly what it needed to do, namely get all of the people and pieces into place for the Last Battle. However I can't help but think there is going to be too much left to finish for one book. There are already rumors of Memories of Light being over a 1000 pages long, possibly as much as 1400 pages.

But enough about all that.

The Good in ToM in no particular order.

The new Zen-Rand as some fans call him, he is awesome and a return in many ways to the Rand of the earliest books in the series. Two of the best scenes in the book are his namely his moment at the battle of Maradon and his one or two page total verbal ass-kicking of Cadsuane.

Perrin finally accepting his fate and getting stuff done. Two of my other favorite scenes in the book are his. His conversation with Egwene during the battle in the dream world, and him and Neald rediscovering how to make power-wrought weapons.

Matt getting around to doing something that has been foreshadowed and teased for many books. His rescue of Moiraine is great stuff, and her return promises some great scenes in Memories of Light

And finally stuff happens, plot strands get ended or merged into other strands. The pace of events is speeding up.

And now the Bad.

I hate the female Aes Sedai, particularly Egwene more than ever. The last battle is coming and everyone knows it, but the Aes Sedai are still plotting and scheming and think that only they know best what to do. Female characters in general in this book come across poorly, with the exceptions of Brigette, Moiraine and partly Nynaeve and maybe Aviendha(her scenes are some of the best in the book). Elayne, Faile, Berelain, Cadsuane, countless Aes Sedai and other female characters all come across very negatively. Focus on winning the last battle(something most of the male characters are doing) instead of scheming for advantage after that battle.

The Forsaken are pretty much weaker and more ineffective than ever, although the return of Lanfear should be interesting. All the Forsaken's plans come to basically nothing in this book, except possibly for whatever is going on in the Black Tower(Argh, there needed to be more time spent on the BT, but we'll get that next book).

Saunderson cannot quite match the voice of some characters, and his writing style is more overtly different than Jordan's in this book. Being streamlined with less detail allows him to move faster, but in some scenes I couldn't help but wish for Jordan's level of description and detail. Especially battle scenes. Jordan was a Vietnam veteran with combat experience and awards for valor. Saunderson just can't write battle scenes nearly as well as Jordan could. Which does not bode well for the last book which should have many, many battles.

Finally, a lot of stuff happens in ToM, but the first 500 pages or so are kind of a drag. And most of the good stuff is reserved for the last 200 pages. If the entire book had been able to match the last few hundred pages it would have been a great book, instead of just very good.

Oh, and a last niggling point that I hope someone can answer. Who the heck is the woman Aviendha meets on her journey?

I'm now two thirds finished and am loving it. Brandon Sanderson is exactly what this series needed to be completed. No offense to Robert Jordan (may he rest in peace) but he was simply dragging out story lines and not resolving old ones. TONS of events have passed since "The Gathering Storm" even and they didn't feel rushed or brushed aside. Zen Rand is pure awesomeness. It has taken a long time for Rand to become this serene and it took the events of the box to make him like this and nearly killing Min but here is ready for Tarmon Gai'Don.

There have already been many epic moments in the book as wel. I haven't felt this excited about the series in years, really since "The Lord of Chaos" I think, maybe "The Crown of Swords". I'm not even finished this and I'm already eager for "A Memory of Light" in 2012. Hate that we have to wait almost two years for the final book but at least we're finally getting it. I think I will cry when I read the last words of the final book. I started reading WOT when I was thirteen years old and it has had a very important part in my life.

My one gripe is that we have to wait until the last book for Rand and Elayne to reunite. I believe the last time he saw her was back in "Crossroads of Twilight" when his three women bonded him to them and he slept with Elayne.

Finished the book and thought it was fantastic, at least on par with "The Gathering Storm". The wait for Tarmon Gai'Don begins. It seems like March 2012 is when "A Memory of Light" will be published. I hope that Sanderson does another The World of The Wheel of Time book. I know that Harriet (RJ's wife) has talked at conventions and online interviews about compiling a massive WOT Encyclopedia for publication after the final book is out.

There's been rumors for years about some sort of spin-off series from Wheel of Time, either set in the Age of Legends or far future from WoT itself. I doubt Sanderson will want to play in Jordan's sandbox anymore after the last book, but another author might get the job.

Personally I think a series in the Age of Legends would have potential. Huge battles everywhere, heroic good guys going to the darkside, main characters getting killed left and right. The creation of all sorts of new weapons and creatures. And of course, evil wins in the end, sort of. In the right hands it could be fantastic.

It is just a shame that we're going to have to wait until the last WoT book for that type of epic scope. Hopefully some of our heroes fall to the Dark One.

I agree that an Age of Legends series would be excellent but don't see any reason why Sanderson wouldn't want to continue with the franchise if Harriet allows him. I've read nothing but praise for his work so far. I do think there will be some deaths...I'm really interested in Aviendha's vision of the future, this Dragon's Peace that is mentioned. I'd be up for a sequel series too that deals with a Seanchan conflict. I think major stuff is gonna go down in the final book that some fans won't be too happy with.

Sanderson has several series of his own already started, including one that is(I think) planned out to be ten volumes. I've read some snippets here and there from him, and I have the distinct impression that while he is honored to be picked to finish WoT, he'd rather work in his own worlds afterward.

Ah yes okay in that context....although working on the Dune series has not sadly stopped Pinky and the Brain from still writing their own projects. I wonder who Harriet would select to do a prequel series? I'm inclined to just have the encyclopedia that has been promised and leave the series at that.

I just finished the book and apparently like Adm Young I also borrowed it from the Library. I made a decision to stop buying Wheel of Time books due to the increasing feeling of things just being dragged out for the sake of prolonging book sales so I haven't bought a book since about the 6th or 7th one I guess.

I'm curious though about how most fans seem to say things like Sanderson is really delivering and tying up loose ends and bringing plot points to fruition when isn't he simply following Jordan's notes? I mean don't get me wrong as I said earlier I grew extremely frustrated with Jordan dragging out this series, but I think Jordan legitimately sat down and penned out the conclusions to many of his dangling plots... Perhaps knowing he didn't have much time to left made him realize he had to tie the series up, but he was working on this as a conclusion.

Sanderson ultimately inherited hundreds to over a 1000 pages of scenes + notes that Jordan wrote. I believe initially Jordan was writing to finish the series in a written storyline form and when he realized that wasn't going to be possible he created more and more notes for the next author to use.

It's not like Jordan had nothing planned and was continuing to drag the series out for another 10 novels when suddenly he dies and Sanderson comes in and takes over and finishes the series off. All of this was planned by Jordan. I give Sanderson a lot of credit for stepping in and doing a very fine job and I'm sure he's having to write and create scenes that made only had the barest of descriptions by Jordan, but I'm not going to act like Sanderson is doing everything on his own.

While RJ did indeed plan out and even wrote partially the manuscript that has been since turned into books twelve, thirteen, and fourteen (remember the finale were originally going to be one huge book), Brandon has given interviews over the course of the last couple of years talking about having to go back and re-structure and rewrite several portions of the notes and initial draft that RJ did...with Harriet's blessing and permission of course. Indeed, after "The Gathering Storm" came out last year Brandon and Harriet did online interviews where he discussed what it was like having her as his editor on the book and what a process it was.

I don't think fans are saying that Brandon created these last three books from scratch, far from it...but he has put his own stamp on the series and with Harriet's blessing and support. I hope that clears up thoughts about his impact on the series.
