Has anyone here bought computer parts from Newegg?

I bought some ram my card was charged the price for the ram now the purchase seems to have dropped off my statement and the money is back in my account?

WTF?

I expect the money to go out again but don't know what happened here, and the item is now listed as "shipped"

I've bought some odds & ends from Newegg, but his has never happened. I've seen this behavior fom other online retailers, it happens.

Probably just some glitchy behavior with their system. Just because they sell computer parts doesn't mean they know computer systems ;)

I usually price stuff out between Newegg & Tiger Direct, though I did build an entire system from parts ordered from Tiger Direct several years ago.

I've never bought from them, mostly because the Canadian version of Newegg is not priced very competitively. Some of the prices I've seen, such as when pricing laptops for instance, are absurd, even with refurbished items. In comparison, bought many times from TigerDirect as the prices are much more reasonable and the latest thing was a refurbished laptop for around $300. Similar laptop, but inferior refurb model at NewEgg cost nearly three times as much.

Yikes!!!!!!!!!!

Yeah, I can't figure that one out. Only thing I can think of is that they're still using their U.S warehouse and distribution, but if that's the case, I've never seen any other site like that be quite as bad in the price discrepancies, even from ones operating on U.S soil shipping to Canada. From TigerDirect, other than the specs, I didn't know what I'd be getting exactly, but turned out to be quite a steal as it's a former high-end Dell Latitude from 2011, so once I found out what it was exactly, I was very pleased with what I ended up getting. I think TigerDirect has an actual warehouse in Canada, which would make a difference too, whereas, I don't think NewEgg does.

So, I tend to not even check it as the prices tend to be a joke. Only reason I had checked it this time around was because It had been a long time since I had checked out the site, and figured I'd give them the benefit of doubt and see if they'd improved. Nope.

And this morning the money had again gone out of my account and this time it showed up as being taken properly and not put on hold.

Certainly odd if that's how they do stuff.

Bought with them plenty of times, never really had issues. Only real annoyance is that when you're buying a lot of computer components (like building a new PC), the credit card company sometimes trips fraud flags and assumes a hacker got your info, so sometimes there's a brief holdup while you clear it with them before it goes through.

Not a totally unusual purchase for me, apparently CC thieves are just more likely to try and buy a bunch of electronics/computer parts, so whenever there's enough on one order, it can be seen as questionable...

That happened to me when I bought my DSLR on ebay years ago. It's really more about your credit card company actually looking out for you than where you're shopping. I wanna say that purchase was around $1500.

NewEgg could very well be like an Amazon, in that they're a front for many other sellers. Maybe they submitted the charge incorrectly, so it had to be recalled. Then they processed it correctly the next time. The main concern would be getting charged for something you didn't order, or if you cancelled an order but the charge wasn't rescinded.

As far as service goes, they're pretty good. Kind of like a Best Buy. Prices are generally good. I didn't buy much from them in the past, because they'd charge me state tax... but now Amazon does that routinely so it's no longer a factor to discriminate.

They are pretty good. I did do an online chat when the first charge happened with one of their representatives and they noted that on my account. The proper charge happened the day the items shipped as the hold the bank did had to drop the money back into my account, so that's why I thought something had gone wrong. But now it's all sorted so I'm pretty happy.

I did notice there was a period where I first placed my order it is listed as going through verification which allows you to change or cancel the order before it ships. I think that's kind of neat, especially if you make a mistake with number of items or wish to cancel the whole thing.

It's not a "could very well be," it is an "is." They have merchandise which they fulfill themselves, and merchandise which is being offered by third party sellers. There is a "Sold and shipped by [x]" line that tells you whether a given part is coming from Newegg or a third party seller.
