Back in 1986 I saw TWOK for the first time when it premiered on the ITV (UK) channel and despite being badly panned and scanned and (as I later discovered) having scenes missing in order to fit ITV's schedule, the film blew me away and remains to this day one of my all time faves.
The version I saw had a scene that I've never seen or heard of anywhere else, not in subsequent TV broadcasts, my VHS widescreen box set of the first six films or even in the Director's Cut by Meyer that Paramount released on DVD some years back.
It takes place just after Kirk and the others beam back from Regula and Spock informs him of power issues below sea deck and before Kirk, Spock and Saavik reach the bridge. There was a 2nd subtitled conversation between Spock and Saavik about Kirk. It ends with Spock predicting Kirk's victory over Khan: "because he is the best".
During the 90s and early 2000s when I heard about the "ABC-TV version" that contained extra footage, at first I assumed this must've been the cut I saw but of course this wasn't the case because the one I watched was identical to the theatrical release apart from the above scene. My VHS recording of the premiere has unfortunately long since vanished and If I'd realised back then that this was an oddity, I would've taken much better care of it...
I've scoured everywhere online trying to see if anyone else remembers this additional scene from the 1986 airing or is aware of it. I read that there are numerous versions of TWOK floating around and it has amongst the most deleted/alternate scenes of all ST's TOS' films. Some years back I came across the "lost" clips detailing Saavik's Romulan heritage and the hint at a romance between her and David during the original final moments but never anything on the scene I mentioned.
At 33 I'm a little too young just yet for senility (I hope!) so I know my mind isn't playing tricks on me lol. I know I saw this because ever since I've wondered where that scene is when I see other versions. Till recently, when I came across the TV promo spots for TWOK's cinema release on You Tube, I had even began to doubt if they existed because no-one else around me even remembered them.
Can anyone help shed some light on the matter for me please?
