Has anyone else seen this version of TWOK?

El Chapo

Cadet
Newbie
Back in 1986 I saw TWOK for the first time when it premiered on the ITV (UK) channel and despite being badly panned and scanned and (as I later discovered) having scenes missing in order to fit ITV's schedule, the film blew me away and remains to this day one of my all time faves. :)

The version I saw had a scene that I've never seen or heard of anywhere else, not in subsequent TV broadcasts, my VHS widescreen box set of the first six films or even in the Director's Cut by Meyer that Paramount released on DVD some years back.

It takes place just after Kirk and the others beam back from Regula and Spock informs him of power issues below sea deck and before Kirk, Spock and Saavik reach the bridge. There was a 2nd subtitled conversation between Spock and Saavik about Kirk. It ends with Spock predicting Kirk's victory over Khan: "because he is the best".

During the 90s and early 2000s when I heard about the "ABC-TV version" that contained extra footage, at first I assumed this must've been the cut I saw but of course this wasn't the case because the one I watched was identical to the theatrical release apart from the above scene. My VHS recording of the premiere has unfortunately long since vanished and If I'd realised back then that this was an oddity, I would've taken much better care of it... :(

I've scoured everywhere online trying to see if anyone else remembers this additional scene from the 1986 airing or is aware of it. I read that there are numerous versions of TWOK floating around and it has amongst the most deleted/alternate scenes of all ST's TOS' films. Some years back I came across the "lost" clips detailing Saavik's Romulan heritage and the hint at a romance between her and David during the original final moments but never anything on the scene I mentioned.

At 33 I'm a little too young just yet for senility (I hope!) so I know my mind isn't playing tricks on me lol. I know I saw this because ever since I've wondered where that scene is when I see other versions. Till recently, when I came across the TV promo spots for TWOK's cinema release on You Tube, I had even began to doubt if they existed because no-one else around me even remembered them.

Can anyone help shed some light on the matter for me please? :techman:

well I found this http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0084726/alternateversions.

It clears you of insanity, but doesn't help locate the missing footage.

Is broadcast of this particular cut common in the U.K.?
As an American I am unfamiliar with your tv channel selection.

I hate to say it, but that doesn't sound Spock-like at all.

Thanks for the replies, in the UK we have five main broadcasters who transmit via an analog terrestrial system. Four of the five are commercial companies which operate through revenue from adverts and sponsorship. The odd one out is the BBC whom are run like HBO in that they have no adverts whatsoever.

There are many more channels which are available through digital terrestrial, satellite and cable subscriptions (of which SKY is the most popular). The most common cut shown on analog terrestrial TV was traditionally the theatrical release (with minor edits for the Ceti eels sequence) and it was only in 1986 that I saw the version that I mentioned which is identical to the theatrical one, with the exception of that scene.

The closest to what is called in the U.S "The ABC-TV version" over here is the Director's Edition which has been screened by digital terrestrial, satellite and cable broadcaster Film4.

I hate to say it, but that doesn't sound Spock-like at all.
Maybe that's why the scene never made it to a "regular" version but this isn't some wind-up or a belated April Fools joke lol. Every time I've watched other broadcasts and versions of TWOK ever since I've wondered what happened to that scene...

That scene never existed.

It's a bad memory or made-up story.

It's not in the script and it's not in the 'Making of Trek II' book that listed virtually every cut scene in the movie.

Totally bogus.

Never happened. Never was filmed. Never was scripted. Never was aired.
Either a little kid's imagination or total BS.

Descretion is the better part of valor.

Okay, Vonda McIntyre's novelization contains all/most of the scenes trimmed for time/pace, but the scene that follows the power issues below C Deck has Saavik asking, "Admiral... what happens if Reliant fails to follow us into the nebula?"

Kirk: "That's the least of our worries. Khan will follow us."

Spock, to Saavik: "Remind me, Lieutenant, to discuss with you the human ego."

The scene Therin just quoted, minus Kirk's dialogue, does appear in the "ABC cut" of the movie, and possibly the Director's Cut on the DVD as well.

I too saw the old TWOK broadcasts on ITV back in the day and I remember no such scene.

btw, you username is curiously familiar.....

The memory does funny things. I'm still convinced I saw the Geordi torture scene in Generations, yet I am assured that this is impossible.

I know what you mean and that one has always stuck with me too. Maybe because of Soran's joke about "His heart just wasn't in it". A line of dialogue which makes no sense, without knowing he'd stopped Geordi's heart with the use of Nanoprobes. In the theatrical version, we barely learn what the torture was and that's in a throwaway moment. Just a brief line from Doctor Crusher in sickbay, about having removed them and that he'll be fine. Having read the novelisation before going to the cinema, perhaps that's where we both falsely remember 'seeing' these scenes.

Here's hoping they do a Director's Edition someday, which restores some of Soran's more villainous moments.

Yes, I assume it's those floating lines, and probably reading the novelisation soon after. My vivid pre-pubescent imagination jumbled them up, and concocted the scene, complete with a powerful performance from LeVar Burton.

It's a clever thing, the brain.

I'd like to see a release of Generations that has all the deleted scenes, not just a half-arsed selection like the last DVD.

I remember that scene too, but as I also read the novel for I saw the film (the Odeon in Salisbury) so thats what I chalk it up to, but then again, when ever I watch Generations I still expect to see the scene yet even though I also know it ain't gonna happen!

I remember that too!
That's because it exists. Poor quality versions of this deleted scene have been around on the net for quite a few years. Someone has put the scene up here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=54vIMGr1ho0 (if YouTube links aren't allowed, Mods please edit out).

As for TWOK scene, never heard of it.

Must admit, I've never heard of or seen the TWOK scene, and it does sound completely un-Spock-like.

The Generations scene, wasn't that on the DVD outtakes?
