In the hands of a writer who knew how to develop her characters, Harry Kim would flourish as well.

Imagine if Harry had missed Voyager's departure and been forced to transfer to DS9, a show that even did things with its villains and tier-2's... five years later, when the show ended...
* He would have a ○○ on his collar.
* He would have had several major romances, and have married his last one in the temple, with the Emissary giving his blessing.
* We would have met his parents in a comic episode.
* He might have gotten a few episodes that were generic in nature. He might have inherited Chester the cat, been recruited by S31, endured a virtual prison sentence, or slipped through a time rift and had to go feral for a few years. These experiences would have changed him.
* He would have learned to use a bat'leth and used it to carve up some Jem'Hadar at some point.
* If "Non Sequitur" still occured, he would have turned up as a guest character on "Voyager", and had to try to get back to DS9.
* Life, love, war, PTSD, would have changed him on a fundamental level and he would not be recognizable as the young ensign Quark almost plucked like a hen.

Hmm... it's a hard one. I'd say there are some similarities and differences.

Similarities: Both are on a 7 year journey. Both have an adoptive mum since their real mum is 'too far away'. Both usually don't understand what's really going on till it's too late, and have those older and wiser around him, trying to protect them, which they need to because both usually are the butt of the enemies' attack. Both are willing to die for the good of their friends, only to have a nasty habit to undie later on, or treacherously 'turning out to not have died after all' .

More than enough differences as well, though. Both are frenetically searching to acquire objects but while Potter actually does (hallow), Kim never gets that 2nd pip. While Potter gets to use his magic wand all the time throughout the entire series, Kim gets to use his only once, perhaps twice. While Potters adoptive mummy offers him delicious homecooked meals everytime he visits, Kim's would only be able to offer him incinerated pot roasts from the replicator, and lots of coffee. On the other hand, she does not condemn him to wearing stupid & ugly home-knitted Christmas sweaters, just a stupid uniform.

Truly an intricate topic worthy of deeper discussion.

Ugly Christmas sweaters are a time-honored holiday tradition, right up there with hot chocolate, carols, and kids waiting in line to sit on Santa's lap and tell him what they want him to bring them*.

If there was ever Christmas on Voyager, I think that Harry would very likely wear an ugly sweater, even if he had to burn some replicator rations to make it.

*Or sit 6 feet from Santa, who is now wearing an appropriately Christmassy face mask.

If there was ever Christmas on Voyager,

Can't be that would be a human and, even worse, western Holiday and those are outlawed in 90s Trek. If it isn't a Klingon holiday that involves everybody getting beaten with pain sticks (and/or poisoned) then it simply can't be celebrated.

Well then, if there was a Pain Stick Day on Voyager, I could see Harry doing his ritual screams of agony in an ugly sweater with sparkles and little LED lights all over it.

At least there's still Christmas in the Nexus, so Picard at least wishes for it.
