Harlan Ellison suffered a stroke

Ellison's legendary Stubbornness will be a great ally for him in the battle ahead, want-to and work are the keys "Never give up , Never surrender" the brain can remap itself though his age is a negative wishing him the best

Yes, his determination and combativeness would seem to be important assets in the struggle to recovery. I would only hope that we have the opportunity to see that fierce intelligence alight once again, in the wider world!!! :techman:

Here's an update that David Gerrold posted yesterday:

David Gerrold said:
Spent a few hours with Harlan today. Mostly laughing, shmoozing, remembering, gossiping, filling in backstory, all the stuff people do when they finally have time to talk.
He's making excellent progress, already able to lift his right arm and move his leg -- stuff he couldn't do two days ago -- and still able to talk for hours nonstop. And he still has a memory like a steel trap. Can't say enough how much I admire his spirit.

Very happy to hear that the paralysis is receding.

I wish him all the best.

And to any of his fans who have not seen Dreams With Sharp Teeth, a documentary about him, I would highly recommend it.

Thanks for that, I have not seen that and being a long-time fan of Harlan's work, I will definitely have to check it out.

You are welcome.

I had always read all of the terrible things, re. being sue-happy, said about Harlan but I never really had an opinion one way or the other. Having seen the doc I still don't know the full story, no one does, but it certainly made me appreciate the tremendous creative talent and wit the man possesses.

One of my favorite bits from the film

Fame and fortune are transitory. Health and happiness are the real valuables. Here's wishing Mr. Ellison a speedy recovery so he can continue with his dedication to the sci-fi world.

I guess the stress of hating everyone and everything finally got to him. But, seriously, I hope he's alright.

Ugh. That's terrible. Hope he gets better. I wish that cantankerous bastard all the best.
These comments mirror my own thoughts about Harlan Ellison. I wish him a speedy recovery. Thankfully, he has the insurance and resources to get the best care.

For over 24 years, I took care of my mother after her first stroke. She had more. It was a tragic set of occurrences which changed our family's lives forever. Mom did not get help during the first 5 hours and 45 minutes. (She did not live with me at the time.)

For a stroke, time is loss... of motor skills, of recovery, of so much. Know this: F.A.S.T. (There is an app you can download for your phone.)

Face Drooping – Does one side of the face droop or is it numb? Ask the person to smile. Is the person's smile uneven?
ucm_452107.jpg
Arm Weakness – Is one arm weak or numb? Ask the person to raise both arms. Does one arm drift downward?
ucm_452108.jpg
Speech Difficulty – Is speech slurred? Is the person unable to speak or hard to understand? Ask the person to repeat a simple sentence, like "The sky is blue." Is the sentence repeated correctly?

Time to call 9-1-1 – If someone shows any of these symptoms, even if the symptoms go away, call 9-1-1 and get the person to the hospital immediately. Check the time so you'll know when the first symptoms appeared.
Here is a wallet card which shows the warning signs of stroke. Please print this and keep it. It may save someone you love.

My mother had 2 devastating strokes. The first came a few days after a surgical procedure on her back. Her mind was normal immediately after the surgery, but the next day she was slightly confused. My aunt and I tried to tell the doctors that something was wrong, but they insisted it was related to her anesthesia and would wear off. The next night she had a stroke.

I have family members who have suffered a stroke. The absolute key to having a successful recovery is medical help as fast as humanly possible. If they get to you quickly and can administer the necessary medication right away there is a real chance of success. Here's to the continued recovery of David, Ellison, and everyone else who is unfortunate enough to be stricken.

Just two months ago, I lost a dear friend to a sudden stroke. She was only 42 with 2 great young boys, and married to my oldest friend. She got help right away but it all depends on the type and severity. Not intending to generate sympathy, just that this really brought her to my mind again. I'm really happy to hear Mr. Ellison is improving and Peter David is also pretty much back to his old self. These things serve as reminders of what is really important. They've touched a lot of lives and I hope they continue to do so for many years.

I hope you all live long and happy lives as well. Try to enjoy every second.

Last night Harlan posted on his Webderland site that he's home. Wishing him continued recovery.
