Harlan Ellison suffered a stroke

That's unfortunate to hear. :(

The one time I met him is a great memory. He was everything I'd heard about, and more! A unique man, to be sure!

I guess the stress of hating everyone and everything finally got to him. But, seriously, I hope he's alright.

This is the announcement that his wife Susan posted to the Ellison Webderland site:

Susan Ellison said:
FROM SUSAN
I will make this brief. A couple of days ago Harlan had a stroke. He's in the hospital. His right side is paralyzed.
He's comfortable--as possible. We will keep you up-to-date with his progress.
With all kindness --Susan

Harlan is a wonderful and generous man and I hope for a speedy and complete recovery for him.

For all the flaws the man may have, he's one of the most brilliant authors of our time. I wish him a complete and speedy recovery.

Strokes suck and can really screw a person's life over. Fortunately, it's not necessarily a death sentence. My grandmother had a severe stroke when she was 84 which left her in the hospital and rehab for months. And while she never was quite the same as she was before the stroke, she is still alive and will be celebrating her 100th birthday next year. I share this story only to point out that while yes, this is going to have a severe impact on Ellison's life, there is still a chance he'll stay with us for many years yet.

I wish him all the best.

And to any of his fans who have not seen Dreams With Sharp Teeth, a documentary about him, I would highly recommend it.

I wish him the best. I was lucky in that the stroke I had around age 50 was mild in comparison, but realizing something was going wrong with speech, movement, mental processes, and visual perception was terrifying. I can't even pinpoint the year it actually happened. It was bad enough to ensure I'd never work again.

Wonder where and how bad the damage is that his Mind is intact is good news as he'll be able to understand and process what the therapists working with him are after work and persistence are they keys I lost right side, motor cortex, so left side hemipalegia, but now 31 months out I walk without a cane, even though I wasn't supposed to be able to again and am seeing some return with the arm Ellison's legendary Stubbornness will be a great ally for him in the battle ahead, want-to and work are the keys "Never give up , Never surrender" the brain can remap itself though his age is a negative wishing him the best

Thanks for that, I have not seen that and being a long-time fan of Harlan's work, I will definitely have to check it out.

Best wishes to the man for a speedy recovery. Meeting him back in the 90s was a pleasure.

Who the hell's he going to sue over this then ?

Seriously though, best wishes for a recovery Harlan...

best wishes for a recovery Harlan...

Agreed.

I don't know Harlan personally, of course. I'd wager that most of us here don't. We've all heard the "talking points" about how cantankerous he is, but none of that matters now. None.

Nobody, and I do mean nobody, deserves this. Strokes are terrifying and dangerous, and I wouldn't wish one on anyone. I don't care what they're like or what they've done.

Everyone, absolutely regardless of personal attitudes towards Harlan or his work, should wish him a full recovery.

Congrats on your recovery thus far. Best of luck going forward.
