Hard Drive question

I have 2 - 500GB Samsung HDD's in my machine right now (C: & D: ). D: is getting a little close to full with all the ripped TV episodes and Stooge shorts not to mention many of my apps.
I just ordered a 1.5 TB HDD to replace D: , and the former D: will become a third, backup HDD by way of an IDE/SATA converter, since all 4 of my SATA connections are being used.

The question is, if I straight copy my current D: to the new HDD, then rename the new HDD to D:, will I have any problems with shortcuts or the registry entries for those apps? The new HDD will be on the same physical SATA channel as the current D: once I'm done copying.

You shouldn't have any problems.

If I were you I would get an external drive enclosure for your backup drive. A power supply failure or any short or failure on your motherboard can damage a hd or at least damage data. Keeping the backup drive outside with an independant power supply is a much more secure backup for minimal cost, especially if you are going to buy a pata/sata adapter anyway. (Although the adapter should be quite cheap, count the cost against the enclosure.)

Thanks for the reply.
I could run the external as a USB, right? So even though I've already bought an IDE/SATA adapter (for about $5), I wouldn't need that if I go with the backup as an external plugged in a USB port.
