Happy 'I have no effin clue this holiday is called' Day!

Thespeckledkiwi

Vice Admiral
Today, May 1st is the halfway point between the beginning of the New Year and the end of the previous year. It is a time of reflection of the vows you made at the beginning of the year and to see how far you've come along...er not well apparently on my list >.<

But happy, I have no clue how to translate this holiday's name day. Now I have to find a cake.

I have a special name for it.

Its called May Day in Britain. They do a lot of strange thing in Britain on May Day. For example in one town in Cornwall

The festival itself starts at midnight on May 1 with unaccompanied singing around the town starting at the Golden Lion Inn. By the morning, the town is dressed with greenery, flowers and flags, with the focus being the maypole. The climax arrives when two groups of dancers progress through the town, one of each team wearing a stylised recreation of a 'horse.' The two 'osses are known as the "Old" and the "Blue Ribbon" 'osses. During the day a number of "Junior" 'osses appear, operated by children. Accompanied by drums and accordions and led by acolytes known as "Teasers", each 'oss is adorned by a gruesome mask and black frame-hung cape under which they try to catch young maidens as they pass through the town. The Blue ribbon oss is apparently of more recent origin. In the late 19th century it was supported by members of the Temperance movement who were trying to discourage the consumption of alcohol associated with the "old" 'oss followers. After the first world war the imperative of temperance was lost, and the 'oss became known as the Peace 'Oss. Each 'oss has a "stable" (in the case of the Old 'Oss, the Golden Lion Inn and the Blue Ribbon 'Oss, the Institute, from which they emerge at the start of the day's proceedings and retire at the end. Some time in the late afternoon the 'osses may meet at the maypole and dance together.

Yep, pretty much everywhere except in the USA and Canada. ;)

It isn't Labour Day in Australia. Labour Day in Australia diifers depending on which state

Celebrating the Australian labour movement, the Labour Day public holiday is fixed by the various state and territory governments, and so varies considerably. It is the first Monday in October in the Australian Capital Territory, New South Wales and South Australia. In both Victoria and Tasmania, it is the second Monday in March (though the latter calls it Eight Hours Day). In Western Australia, Labour Day is the first Monday in March. In both Queensland and the Northern Territory, it is the first Monday in May.

That from Wiki.

May 1st isn't any sort of holiday in Australia, I guess because we are in mid-autumn here.

1'st of may is called 1'st of may and it's that one day of the year where you get ½ the day off to go meet all your union buddies, dust off the old red flag and drink beer and listen to speeches and sing all the old worker songs in the park...

May 1st is RJDiogenes Day. Seriously.

I believe it's May Day (although maybe it's that so we're not a bunch of card carrying commies ;) ).

:scratches head:

I'm not great at math, but it seems to me that there are more days ahead of us to tne end of the year than there are behind us to the begining of the year.

How is today half-way to anything, again?

I could be wrong, but I think the OP uses a different calendar than the rest of us.

Because.... the Gregorian Calendar that the entire Western World, and most of the Eastern one to boot, uses isn't good enough for him and he has to reference a different calendar recognized by a small segment of the population and is likely not used by the bulk of this board to know what day is where in the year?

Ok... gotcha.

Today is the first anniversary of my engagement to Man.
To celebrate I am cooking special dinner, but as they didn't have oranges in my local shop and I couldn't bear a trip to supermarket, we are having Duck a la mandarin slices
Hey he loves me, and I truly hope he still will after tonight :(

But I do like the idea of it being RJD day! :D Happy Day!

It's a pagan holiday as well - Beltane celebrating Spring-time and pretty much the opposite end to the calendar from the holiday of Samhain, which is October 31st / November 1st and celebrates harvest.

Sounds brilliant. Have a great night, and please let us know how the duck a la mandarin slices works out. :)

Yes, the Padstow 'Obby 'Oss, i've been numerous times, although today the weather's a bit shitty for that sort of thing. The place is a complete wreck at the end of it.

It's not my favourite Southwest festival though, in the next county along they have the tar barrel festival, this is possibly the most insanely fun thing I have ever been to, although the hood of my coat got melted by flying tar last time.

Check out the video, watch it right through to the end to get a good idea of just how incredibly dangerous it is, they just pile through the crowd with these flaming barrels of tar and it's your problem if you don't get out of the way quick enough
