Happy Birthday TFF

There is absolutely nothing wrong with the concept of STV: it's classic "Kirk meets "God"". And acting wise, it's really not that much different, again, than TOS. The problem is, Shatner isn't that good of a director and it was really poor execuetion that killed the movie. There were some wonderful character moments: The campfire scene-- which is one of my top 10 'Trek scenes ever cause it was so much of a "tired old warriors" moment, the final scene in the lounge with them all in front of the ship's wheel, Even Sybok isn't a bad character (in concept). The problem is that the story was bigger than the way they went with it.

Well said.

I would agree, but also add that key elements that they needed failed on them beyond their control.

J.

It's even difficult to judge Shatner's directorial ability given these heavy limitations. Was he a bad director or just a royally screwed newbie?

Definitely agreed with both of you. It's certain: the various odds that combined against him formed the perfect storm against which Shatner had to sail in making his film.

It gave us "marshmellons." Happy belated birthday. :)

You know, I've always wanted to try those.

Only if you then engage in the ritual known as the "sing-along." And have bought the requisite tie-in marshmellon dispenser by Kraft. See here.

Did anyone else see Trekmovie.com's "20 Facts" post? Some known stuff, there, but some stuff new to me too, like that the stairs the gang walk down from the shuttle were apparently from Patrick Stewart's trailer. :rommie:

"We were speculating. Is God really out there?
Maybe he's not out there, Bones. Maybe he's right here. Human heart. "

yeah I still love that movie, dammit.

Yeah, and I don't think that line is atheistic as some people have complained that it was.

I had always assumed that they were asking is God out "there", as in, somewhere in space...findable... it's not athiestic to ask that.

Im one of the few that like TFF. I just watched it again the other night. Yep, the effects suck verily, that catwoman in the bar makes me throw up in my mouth, yadda yadda, but i happen to LIKE the interplay between the characters. I felt like at their age, being together so long, they would act this way...

Frankly only bill shatner's heart is awesome enough to contain god anyway.

It does that better than any other trek movie, IMO, and it's the strongest aspect of the movie. The whole quest-for-god theme I like also, although it gets silly in places.

Okay, I got this one watched about a week ago and I didn't think it was too bad. The FX were worse than I remembered but when you think about all the Murphy's Law that this movie went through I can forgive it. It'd be nice if Shatner were given a chance to fix it up. I found I liked it more than Undiscovered Country- and I still love all the character moments in TFF.

The problem with Star Trek on the big screen is that character moments were sacrificed so much for a big story or space battles. You never got some of the good character moments from the series- and this movie had them more than most. I like it for having more Kelley than the other movies. I found in the other movies I was missing him.
