35 years ago today on May 25, 1977, the very first STAR WARS film in the series premiered in just a small handful of American theaters...a modest debut that in no way indicated the seismic shift in American as well as global pop culture that was about to happen and last for the next generation and a half and still be going strong in the early 21st century.
George Lucas takes a lot of shit from the fanbase(some deserved, some not so much) but on this occasion we should call a truce in our love-hate relationship with the Great Flanneled One and thank him for all the work he's poured into his Saga over the last 35+ years. Without STAR WARS it's possible that STAR TREK would never have experienced the magic revival it did and subsequent explosion into a franchise to rival Lucas in many respects. Lucas changed cinema history, and for the most part for the best. May the Force Be With Us All, Fans and Non-Fans alike.
