Hanks talks sneaking onto the set of TWOK

I seem to remember thinking that Hanks would've been a more appropriate casting choice for Cochrane in First Contact than James Cromwell. At least Hanks looks and sounds vaguely similar to Glenn Corbett, and of course his name would've drawn a lot more attention (with all due respect to Cromwell, who did a fine job in the role).

Wonder if a real big name like Hanks in FC or Murphy in TVH (and Connery in TFF) would've brought in that much more $ (like mega numbers) or if it'd just be a mild increase on what was..

Maybe they should find out in the next one! (and not just Hemsworth)

Hmm... Trek movies haven't tended to have A-list movie stars in them that often, have they? Ricardo Montalban and Christopher Lloyd were known mainly as TV stars. Christopher Plummer was probably the biggest name actor in the TOS movies. Malcolm McDowell and Whoopi Goldberg were probably the biggest names in the TNG movies at the time (though Tom Hardy's become a much bigger name since). The new movies, being on more of a tentpole level, tend to have bigger names -- Cumberbatch and Elba are pretty much A-list stars, and Pine, Saldana, and Pegg are pretty prominent themselves.

Not A-list bankable movie-stars, no, but Trek isn't devoid of moviestars. Take Jane Wyatt for example.

Hanks would have been a great fit for Cochrane, particularly given the symbolism of the character in that film. I think Hanks is one of the world's most 'bankable' stars, meaning that people will go and see a film simply because he's in it.

That Thing You Do! is one of my most favorite movies of all time, so I suppose it all came out okay. ;)

Mild increase at best, probably. I've always chuckled at the notion of Sean Connery playing Sybok, as Laurence Luckinbill was probably the more believable choice for a long-lost brother of Spock, never mind the budget. Always thought of Sybok as an underrated Trek character.

Connery would've been a good choice to play Robert Picard, though, budget permitting.

Bana was also quite a big name to be involved in Trek, and maybe Greenwood abit (JFK as Pike) and Ryder was a reminder of A list of years past. and everyone Trekkie or no was like 'oh wow Robocop is in trek!'

perhaps the best almost casting was brando as soran! http://trekmovie.com/2011/03/02/ric...o-in-star-trek-the-future-of-trek-on-tv-more/

Huh. Was that ever in the cards?

I'm not saying it was. I'm just saying that Connery would've hypothetically been plausible as Stewart's older brother. Others have noted their resemblance; Mel Brooks's Robin Hood: Men in Tights casts Stewart as King Richard I as a nod to Connery's turn in the role in Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves.

Oh, yes, I forgot about Winona Ryder. And I wasn't sure how prominent Eric Bana was, since I've always found him rather meh. And Greenwood is certainly an actor I know well, but I wasn't sure if he was really well-known as a movie star. As for Weller, sure, he was RoboCop a long time ago, but he's settled in as more of a character actor and done a lot of TV.

I dunno. I don't really follow movies all that much, and these days there's so much crossover between movie actors and TV actors that it's hard for me to know whether someone I know well from TV is also a "movie star."

I am sure I read an interview where Hanks was actually going to be playing Cochrane until he couldn't because of scheduling. Though I can't remember where I read it. Some of the promo stuff around release almost certainly.

Gotcha; I genuinely wasn't sure if you were referring to some bit of trivia I hadn't heard of. (That Men in Tights appearances makes a little more sense now!)

Murphy would have probably boosted TVH home since his popularity was peaking then, but I doubt that Connery would have helped TFF, since he tended to appear in a lot of bombs (Highlander 2 anyone?).

I think Murphy would've worked well in TVH and yes it probably wouldve been huge(r) - like Croc Dundee/Top Gun huge

I had the epiphany last year or thereabouts that it's not Murphy TVH needed...it was Steve Gutenberg. Jealous pining after Gillian from afar, trying to uncover Kirk, but comes through in the end. Gutenberg is a perfect fit for Trek, Murphy is great, but would have been too manic. Eddie would be better suited to a serious role in Trek, as an actual Starfleet officer...not least as he probably would have loved that more and put more into it as a result.

Steve Guttenberg's character, had it existed, would have been trying to expose Kirk, not as a man out of time, but as a charlatan, trying to cash in on the whales somehow. He would have made a last ditch effort at the hospital, and when he realized that Kirk and company were the real deal, that's when he would have come through in the crunch, diverting the cops with some ruse to let Gillian get away with Kirk and company in the elevator.
